Hinton wins; Glidewell, Voyles advance BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Democratic primary runoffs for supervisor Tuesday saw Lowell Hinton win re-election in the First District and Steve Glidewell pull out a narrow win over Reed Mitchell in the Fourth District, advancing to November. In the Second District, James Voyles edged out Jon Newcomb for
the party nomination, also advancing to November. Hinton’s race hinged on the outcome of the final box, as he trailed Jerry Miller with two of the district’s three boxes tallied. Miller won Five Points 445 to 345, while Hinton won North Corinth 196 to 160. But Hinton’s home box of Wenasoga went 260-154 in his favor to give him a final total of 840 (50.97 percent) to
Miller’s 806 with absentee ballots. Hinton acknowledged the county has gone through a rough time with the state auditor’s corruption probe, which has yielded nine indictments, and hopes to help set a new course. “We want to put all of that behind us with a new face and with a new group and get what we’ve got startPlease see SUPERVISORS | 2A

Mike LaRue has some more campaigning to do. The military veteran advanced to the Nov. 3 general election by downing Democratic challenger David Derrick 3,683-3,244 in the runoff for Alcorn County Sheriff on Tuesday night. “It was a huge night,” said
LaRue in his first bid for any political office. “I am thankful and honored to have the opportunity to move on.” LaRue took the first four boxes that came in and never looked back. The former investigator with the District Attorney’s Office won 12 of the 17 precincts on the night. Please see SHERIFF | 2A
‘Blue cards’ give students employment advantage BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
Recruiting capable individuals, promoting exciting careers and training a quality workforce for Mississippi’s construction industry, The Mississippi Construction Education Foundation (MCEF) has collaborated with the Alcorn Career and Technology Center in order to bring new opportunities to students. Designed by industry for industry, the non-profit organization was formed by a coalition of construction associates in 1996 and is the designated National Center for Construction Education and Research Training Sponsor for Mississippi. “As the state’s accredited training sponsor for NCCER, we provide workforce training and credentialing through programs in high schools, community colleges and industry,” said MCEF North Area Director Lane Bell
who oversees 34 counties. “We utilize the NCCER curriculum which is a nationally-recognized, competency-based, standardized training curriculum offering permanent credentials for a skilled workforce.” In an effort to provide students and craft professionals with industry-recognized credentials and to assure national portability of skills, NCCER maintains an online credentialing and certification database through its registry which tracks both training and/or assessments for its participants. For training purposes, the registry system provides transcripts, certificates and wallet cards, called “blue cards” to students upon successful completion of the NCCER curriculum through an NCCER Accredited Training Sponsor.
