Fillmore Block Party promotes city BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
Showcasing local businesses and different local cuisines, Fillmore Street will buzz with activity as attendees enjoy Corinth’s first ever block party. Still in the planning stages,
the Fillmore Block Party is slated for Saturday, Sept. 20. Musicians Cary Hudson and Highway One will perform from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free family-friendly event will feature face painting and samples of local cuisines, as
well as, a fashion show that will start at 1 p.m. Roads will be blocked off from Foote to Cruise, setting the stage for a variety of food and retail vendors from all around the city. Pre-sale wrist bands will be
available to try the food vendors. They can be purchased for $5 and will be available at participating vendors. Wristbands are free for children four years old and under. “This being our first one, we hope it will grow and blos-
som into a new tradition for Corinth,” said Grace Curtis, owner of Andie Grace. “Julia Smith came up with the idea and enlisted me to help. We feel it is a great way to promote Please see PARTY | 12A

Auxiliary opens new gift shop BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Volunteers with the Magnolia Regional Health Center Auxiliary couldn’t keep from smiling. The reason for the 25 smiling faces is the new gift shop
located near Entrance B of the hospital. “The new shop opens us more to the hospital,” said volunteer Barbara Wayne. “We weren’t very accessible to the public at the other location … people
never passed the gift shop unless they were lost.” That all changed Aug. 14. The public is invited to get a closer look at the new shop durPlease see SHOP | 12A

Library undergoing renovations BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
As the Corinth Library celebrates its 88th year of service, building maintenance has become an issue. Crews from Price Masonry climbed onto scaffolding with buckets of mortar in hand on Saturday to begin the project of replacing bricks on the building’s exterior walls. “It remains a quality building, but there are many things that must be maintained,” said Library System Director William McMullin. “We have done quite a bit of work this year to the appearance of the building and grounds.” He discussed current business before the Corinth city board earlier this month as the library presented its budget request for the upcoming fiscal year. “We just finished having our parking lot resurfaced and striped,” said McMul-
lin. “We’re getting quotes right now on exterior painting.” The director said the exterior of the library, built in 1926, had not been painted in more than 30 years. McMullin also received advice from the board on a sidewalk sinking problem. “We have noticed our sidewalks are sinking around the building,” he said. “Hopefully it is something we can address and have fixed next year.” Patrons have checked out 90,667 items during the last year at the library. There are currently 9,591 registered active members of which 925 are new members. Patrons have also logged over 19,000 hours of computer use in the last 12 months. “We have 11 computers available for public use,” McMullin said. “Each year
