The Crossroads area is experiencing it’s first major heat wave of the year this weekend. With heat indexes forecasted to reach as high as 107, the National Weather Service in Memphis issued a heat advisory and hazardous weather outlook earlier this week. Temperatures are expected to climb to 98 degrees under sunny skies today with a heat index value of 105. The NWS also issued an extreme heat report to remind people of the dangers associated with such humid weather. During the extremely hot and humid weather, the body’s ability

to cool itself is affected. According to the report, when the body heats up too rapidly to cool itself properly or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, the body temperature rises and heat-related illnesses may develop. Heat-related illnesses can range from heat cramps to heat exhaustion to more serious heat stroke. Heat stroke can result in death and requires immediate attention. Some symptoms of heat stroke include altered mental state, possible throbbing headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, shallow breathPlease see HEAT | 2

Farmington homeowners can get help through grant BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Board of Mayor and Alderman passed a resolution this week to allow homeowners to apply for assistance in the Mississippi Homeowner Rehabilitation/Reconstruction Program. According to City Clerk Debbie Jackson, the grant program provides assistance to low-income families that are making major repairs or reconstructing a home. “This is a great program for folks in our community who currently have something they need help fixing on their home,” said Jackson. “The grant could help pay to replace a leaky roof or damaged flooring.” Before a homeowner can apply for the grant, the property must be lien free and the homowner must have lived at the property for at least 12 months. The program is available to families whose household gross income is at or below 80 percent of the area median income as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). “For Alcorn County, our income requirement limit at $29,050 for a two person household in order to receive the grant,” added Jackson. Eligible families may re-

ceive the grant for major repairs in the home to correct defects in plumbing, roofing, heating, electrical and foundation. There are limits that have been established that provide for a maximum grant amount per project that is determined by criteria established by HUD. Applications are available at city hall. In other business: ■ The board approved the city’s 2013 fiscal year end audit prepared by Brawner, Vanstory & Co. ■ The board also amended the current year budget to transfer surplus debt service funds to general funds. Created by Celeste Clydesdale, “The Amazing Grace Race” is about young racers learning the secret to running life’s grace race is to follow in God’s steps. “Farmington Baptist Church loves children and through programs such as Children’s Choir and Awana we strive to share the love of Jesus with youngsters in the area,” said FBC Youth/Children’s Minister Jarrod Cox. The race begins when Spud — portrayed by Bryce Streetman — makes the decision to

get off the couch and get ready to run. “When facing tough stretches through places like the Valley of Despair and Badlands Bog, these kids learn the value of love, forgiveness and perseverance,” said Essary. They also learn the value of working as a team through the encouragement of their coach, who is played by the church’s Jenny Johnson.
