Corinth officials are asking motorists to keep it legal when parking in downtown Corinth. Parallel parking on the wrong side of the road, against the direction of traffic, is prompting complaints and safety concerns. “I’ve had various senior citizens taking to me about someone’s going to get hurt,” said Mayor Tommy Irwin. “I think there have been some near misses.” It is illegal in the city to par-

allel park against traffic, and he is asking the police department to step up enforcement. “It’s the right thing to do,” said Irwin. Police Chief Ralph Dance said it is happening frequently on Fillmore Street and other areas downtown. “It is causing traffic issues like people not being able to see around some vehicles,” he said. The high demand for parking spaces due to restaurants, shops and residences downtown makes it an ongoing issue, he said.

Benefit aims to replace shop’s iconic barber pole BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

A pair of barbers have plans for a new pole. Katie Taylor and Ginger Sanders will be at Green Market on Sept. 5 in an effort to raise enough money for a new pole at Mullins Barber Shop. The pole had been outside the shop for close to 50 years, according to Taylor. Mullins, a fixture in downtown when it comes to giving haircuts, has been in business at 408 Franklin Street for 58 years. “We don’t want him to have to buy another one,” said Taylor, who is Mullins’ great-niece.

The pole was stolen July 6. “I think if it was still in town we would have heard something by now,” added Taylor. The two female barbers are using a bake sale at the market to raise $800 just to replace the pole. Donations are also being accepted to take care of costs to have the pole installed. “The community support has been great,” said Taylor. Information about the effort to replace the pole has been shared 1,200 times on Facebook. “We think we can raise enough to have it put up right and wired in,” added Taylor.
