BY ZACK STEEN BURNSVILLE — Construction crews at the future site of the Mississippi Silicon in Burnsville have been busy in recent weeks.

“We are making good progress on construction so far,” said David Tuten, president of the Mississippi-based hightech company. “We are on track for our expected startup in the second half of 2015.”

Earthwork was completed in July on the $200 million project at the Northeast Mississippi Waterway Industrial Park located just south of U.S. Highway 72 in Tishomingo County.

Contractors are now in the process of pouring building foundations for the 200,000 square-foot facility. Mississippi Silicon’s compet-

LAWTON, Tenn. — Supporters of the man who “walked tall” gathered near where he was killed Thursday. They were there to remember one of McNairy County’s true legends. Former McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser was recalled as a national hero by the ones who spoke on the 40th anniversary of his tragic death. Pusser died Aug. 21, 1974, from injuries sustained after his Corvette slammed into an embankment on U.S. Highway 64 between Selmer and Adamsville. The former county sheriff was returning home from the McNairy County Fair when his Corvette veered off the road and crashed, ejecting Pusser from the vehicle. “I never dreamed what was about to happen on that night 40 years ago would change the rest of my life,” said Pusser’s daughter, Dwana Pusser Garrison, who was 13 and one of the first to arrive at the crash scene. “Forty years ago, I also

Unwanted animals continue to be a big problem in Alcorn County. “We are not making progress in reducing the number of abandoned and unwanted animals simply by having an animal shelter,” said Shelter Director Charlotte Doehner. “We really need to do more.”

North Madison gets facelift jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Improvements to North Madison Street are set to begin early in the coming week. The street department is preparing to place signage and is encouraging residents to consider taking alternate routes while the work is in progress. Street Commissioner Philip Verdung said he anticipates the repair work will take about a week and a half, and paving will then follow as APAC’s schedule allows. Motorists can expect some delays and closures with this project, which will fix 10 spots on the street, including base repairs. “My advice to anybody that doesn’t live in the area would be to stay off that road while we’re working there,” said Verdung. The street will be open at the Please see FACELIFT | 6A

said Doehner. “Booneville is now up and operating. We have trained their personnel and we’re working with them on spay and neuter programs and joint programs.” The shelter, now operating as a no-kill facility, is also working with interested parties in Tishomingo County to

Absentee voting is off to a fast start in the city. Since opening absentee voting two weeks ago for the Democratic primary in Corinth’s municipal election, City Hall has counted about 150 citizens who have either been voted in the office or have requested an absentee ballot be mailed to them. According to officials at City Hall, the majority of the absentee voters thus far are residents of ward 4, which has the J.C. Hill vs. Steve Hill rematch. Ward 4 residents cast several hundred absentee votes in the race four years ago, and the close result was contested.

She discussed developments at the shelter before the Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Tuesday as the shelter presented its request for contract renewal for services in the upcoming fiscal year. “It is unfortunate, but dropping dogs off in our county because we do have a shelter is a problem, and it’s a serious problem,” she said.

Dumping animals from the county into the city is also a problem. The shelter has developed a three-year plan to try to improve the situation, and part of that is supporting the presence of shelters in neighboring counties. “We’re proud that we were very instrumental in opening a shelter in Prentiss County,”

Synthetic spruce at ‘The Deuce’ The football season gets underway on the local high school front tonight. Corinth will debut its new synthetic turf when it plays host to Kossuth tonight at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium II. Other local action has Biggersville at Alcorn Central, Mooreville at Tishomingo County and Walnut at Booneville. All games begin at 7 p.m. The Warriors’ new turf will also play host to the school’s soccer program, and coaches Cameron Glenn and Gregg Parker got this overhead look of the new surface with a GoPro Hero 3 and DJI Phantom quadcopter.
