City leaders make budget requests past year, said Court Clerk Zane Elliott. Fire Chief Billy Briggs is budgeting for increased fuel costs in the coming year, and the FD budget includes funds for some interior work at fire station #3. In street and sanitation, Street Commissioner Philip Verdung said his department needs some additional staff to offset steadily decreasing numbers in inmate labor. In three years, the number of inmates has decreased from 20 to 5, he said. The department has paid staff totaling 44, and four of those are out on longterm leave. Verdung is also asking the board to begin looking at the purchase of new sanitation polycarts for residential use. The carts currently in use are no longer manufactured, and the department has one person devoted full-time to repairs of the aging fleet. The proposed street budget anticipates several projects including resurfacing of Proper Street, Forrest School Road and Purdy School Road, and some sidewalk work on connecting streets to Wick Street

Man seeking justice for murdered friend William “Billy” Burress wants to stir things up. The Liberty Cab Service driver doesn’t want the murder of his longtime friend and fellow driver Cleo Henderson to fall by the wayside. “I don’t understand how someone killed him and no one knows anything or saw anything,” said Burress. “Something has to break somewhere.” Henderson, 66, was found shot about 2:39 a.m. outside of Liberty Cab Service Henderson in downtown Corinth on May 25 by Burress. Henderson had been a taxi cab driver for the company for over 40 years. “This is a murder that doesn’t need to go unsolved,” said Burress. Corinth Police Department Detective Capt. Ralph Dance

Corinth aldermen began digging deeper into the budget for fiscal 2015 Wednesday morning in a meeting with department heads. It was the Board of Aldermen’s first work session for the upcoming budget, and another will follow next week. The public hearing for the FY 2015 budget will be scheduled to coincide with the next regular board meeting at 5 p.m. on Sept. 2. The department heads presented their preliminary figures for the budget and discussed some of the needs for the coming year. Police Chief David Lancaster is asking to budget for four additional patrol officers, which would add one per shift. Two prior vacancies would also be filled. The proposed police budget includes the purchase of three vehicles, including two for patrol and one for the incoming chief. The police department and municipal court are facing increased utility costs, and the court has seen costs for professional services rise with an increase in crime during the

FARMINGTON — Farmington is offering residents an opportunity to buy a snowflake to complete the pole decorations in the city limits this holiday season. “We wanted to allow the people of the city the chance to buy a snowflake in honor or in memory of someone,” said Mayor Dale Fortenberry. “The city will install the snowflake each year and maintain it.” Each snowflake is $138 and will be installed on the existing electric poles at the approval of the Alcorn County Electric Power Association. The deadline to purchase a snowflake is Sept. 1. “The city will definitely look more festive this Christ-

mas, as snowflakes will be installed on Central School Road and Farmington Road,” said Fortenberry. “There will be snowflakes from one end of the city limits to the other.” Fortenberry said County Road 200 and 218 residents that purchase a snowflake can also request their snowflake be installed near their home. The snowflakes, handmade by the Christmas Factory in Cullman, Ala., are available in five colors: red, blue, clear, green or yellow. The city previously purchased about 40 snowflakes in 2012 at a cost of $135 each. (To purchase a snowflake, contact the city hall at 662665-9647.)
