City studies leisure district options BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

City leaders are reviewing material about the formation of a Leisure and Recreation District, which can allow a person to leave a restaurant with an al-

coholic beverage in designated areas. Members of the Board of Aldermen received a packet of information Tuesday including a fact sheet from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Bureau

of Enforcement and a copy of an ordinance recently passed in Gulfport to establish such a district. Corinth is one of a number of cities that gained the authority to create a Leisure and Recre-

ation District as the result of a law passed by the Mississippi Legislature this year. While the districts have commonly been referred to as “gocup” zones, the ABC says that’s not an accurate description.

The only difference in such a district, according to the ABC, is that a customer may leave the premises of a permitted establishment with an alcoholic bevPlease see LEISURE | 2

Mississippi Action for Progress is planning renovation work at the Easom Community Center for the Head Start program. The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen gave approval on Tuesday to the Easom Outreach Foundation’s request to allow changes to the north building at the former South Corinth school campus. Approval of the final plans by the building inspector is pending. Samuel Crayton, representing the Easom Outreach Foundation, said work could begin in 30 to 45 days if all of the necessary approvals are in hand. The work will include new windows and frontage, bathroom improvements and a relocated entrance on Crater Street with a semi-circle driveway. Head Start began using space at Easom last October because the Bell School Road building no longer met the required standards. In other business: • The board approved 3D Construction’s quote of $7,916.94 for sidewalk im-

provements at the corner of Tate Street and Penn Street. The project is being done with funds donated by Corinth Community Development. • Aldermen gave approval for a special event permit for the Flying Pig Craft Beer Market to hold a craft beer festival in the CARE Garden on Oct. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. • In property cleanup matters, the board set a public hearing for 5 p.m. Sept. 6 for 2109 Walnut Drive, where there is an issue with a boat on the property. Continuances to Sept. 6 were given for 2206 Proper, 301 Parkway and a lot on Bunch Street. Continuances to Sept. 20 were given for 1501 Bunch Street and the recently demolished commercial strip on Shiloh Road. Action was dismissed for 111 Kenneth Street and 2203 Proper Street. • The board commissioned a study of sewer rates by Cook Coggin Engineers. • The board approved the Corinth School District’s request to use Franklin Courtyard today, Thursday, for an event and to close a portion of Wick Street and use the courtyard on Aug. 27 for Warriors on Wick.

People of the Crossroads Cindy Vanhaitsma, Kendrick Staff photo by Zack Steen

A big part of Alcorn County resident Cindy Vanhaitsma’s life is her husband, Stanley. “We’ve been married 29 years and he’s always been there for me, no matter what,” she said. “I owe a great deal to him.” The 47-year-old has worked at Renasant Bank in Corinth for more than 10 years. “It amazes me the people from outside this state who come to Corinth to live – hearing those people’s stories who come into the bank every day is what keeps me going,” said Vanhaitsma. During her off time, Cindy and her husband like to travel. “We don’t even pick a destination,” she said. “We just get in the car and go.” Cindy and Stanley have two daughters and three grandchildren.
