Today in History Today is Saturday, August 15, the 227th day of 2015. There are 138 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History: On August 15, 1945, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced in a recorded radio address that his country had accepted terms of surrender for ending World War II.

On this date: In 1812, the Battle of Fort Dearborn took place as Potawatomi warriors attacked a U.S. military garrison of about 100 people. (Most of the garrison was killed, while the remainder were taken prisoner.) In 1914, the Panama Canal officially opened as the SS Ancon crossed the just-completed waterway between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In 1935, humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post were killed when their airplane crashed near Point Barrow in the Alaska Territory. In 1939, the MGM musical “The Wizard of Oz” opened at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. In 1969, the Woodstock Music and Art Fair opened in upstate New York. In 1974, a gunman attempted to shoot South Korean President Park Chung-hee during a speech; although Park was unhurt, his wife, Yuk Young-soo, was struck and killed, along with a teenage girl. (The gunman was later executed.) In 1989, F.W. de Klerk was sworn in as acting president of South Africa, one day after P.W. Botha resigned as the result of a power struggle within the National Party. In 1995, the Justice Department agreed to pay $3.1 million to white separatist Randy Weaver and his family to settle their claims over the killing of Weaver’s wife and son during a 1992 siege by federal agents at Ruby Ridge, Idaho. Pioneering TV journalist and Timex watch pitchman John Cameron Swayze died in Sarasota, Florida, at age 89.

IUKA — A Belmont man was sentenced to serve five decades in state prison this week. Jay William McCalpin, 38, pleaded guilty in Tishomingo County Circuit Court Thursday. McCalpin was charged with sexual battery and fondling, after he was arrested in September 2014. At that time, investigators discovered photographs and videos of McCalpin sexually abusing a young child. Because of the nature of the crimes, McCalpin will not be eligible for release until he is 88 years old. McCalpin also has charges pending in federal court.

BOONEVILLE — The former Blue Bell Building in downtown Booneville is now the Prentiss County Government Annex. With the slice of pair of ceremonial scissors, local officials cut the ceremonial ribbon Tuesday on the new facility housing the Mississippi Department of Human Services, a courtroom and related facilities for chancery and youth courts and the county veterans service office. “We’re glad to finally open it. It was a long time coming and should be a great benefit to our county,” said Board of Supervisors President Mike Kesler. The 24,000 square-foot renovation of the former factory building on Bridge Street near downtown Booneville will bring all of DHS’s local offices under one roof and provide a muchneeded additional courtroom of chancery and youth courts, which currently share the main courtroom at the courthouse with circuit court. The work was done by contractor Roberst Builders and designed by CookCoggin Engineers. DHS is expected to open in the building Thursday morning. The first term of chancery

court will be held in November, though Chancery Clerk Bubba Pounds said it could have been sooner but the docket and location was already set for the next term at the courthouse. Pounds noted the renovation has not required any increase in taxes. “Thanks to good financial planning we’re able to give the community this without a tax increase,” he said in praising the fiscal responsibility of the board of supervisors in planning the project. DHS will lease its space in the building from the county and those lease payments will be put toward payments on the bonds used to finance the renovations. The county also recently made the final payment on the Prentiss County Justice Center and a portion of those funds will be put toward payments on the new complex. The current DHS office building on Hotel Street will be retained for future use as county office space or storage while the building at the corner of Court Street and Main Street will eventually be demolished to create additional parking for the courthouse and other nearby county offices. Both buildings are owned by the county.

State Rep. Tracy Arnold said he’s proud the legislature was able to be involved in the project and in the funding of upcoming repairs to the parking lot at the new complex.

New Elvis Presley stamp unveiled TUPELO — The United States Postal Service debuted its new forever stamp this week. The stamp, unveiled at the Elvis Presley Birthplace Museum in Tupelo on Thursday, is black and white and features a young photo of the king of rock ’n’ roll. This is the first Elvis stamp released in 22 years. Other music icons with their own stamp include Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix and Janice Joplin.

Tupelo’s second splash pad opens LEE COUNTY — Tupelo’s second splash pad opened this week. The new splash pad in Rob Leake City Park cost the city more than $600,000. Contractors renovated the old swimming pool building, then added the splash pad to the area. It took more than one year to complete the project.
