Power association election nears BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
For the thousands of ACE Power member-customers, it’s almost time to vote. The election set for Tuesday from 10:30 a.m., to 6 p.m., will decide two of the five positions
on the Alcorn County Power Association’s Board of Directors. Incumbents Jerry Brawner and Sam Tull will vie for the two open positions against newcomers Harrison Childs and James (Jimbo) Bryant, Jr. Other board members not up
for re-election this year include Bobby Roberts, Mark Gardner and J.B. Darnell. Each board member holds a three year term. “A position on the ACE Board of Directors is very important,” said ACE Office Manager Eddie
Howard. “They operate mostly as a policy setting board.” Howard said the board is responsible for reviewing the association’s financials each month, along with approving new contracts and reviewing employee policies.
“The board decides and writes the policies all employees and members must follow,” he added. The election will take place during ACE’s annual meeting Please see ELECTION | 3A

Ross serves community as postmaster BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
With a servant’s heart and a willingness to go where needed, Sherry Ross has been an asset to the United States Postal Service since the early 1990’s when she took the test and was hired as a clerk in Tupelo. Born in Corinth and reared near Jacinto, the 57-year-old
has served at many local post offices. After being promoted to Postmaster, she took a job in Dumas in 2001. By 2003 she was working at the post office in Burnsville and in 2005 she found herself in Booneville. She is currently employed as the Postmaster of the Corinth Postal Service where she over-
sees 52 people in Corinth and Glen. “I’m a type A personality like my mother was. We answer to God for what we do, not necessarily a boss. If I expect someone else to work, I feel I should be working as well,” said Ross who accepted the position in Please see ROSS | 2A
Teachers and educational staff members will be honored Monday during Celebration of Excellence in Education. The free event hosted by the C.A.R.E. Foundation’s Commission of the Future of Alcorn County is set to get started at 8:30 a.m., at the Crossroads Arena. Keynote speaker Angela Maiers will present her program, “Mattering is the Agenda.” The program will incorporate some of her “You Matter” presentation that brought about the global movement of Choose2Matter. “Angela’s keynote is going to be great,” said C.A.R.E. Community Foundation Executive Director Mona Lisa Grady. “She is set to highlight two of her more education-based topics of “Passion-Driven Leading and Learning” and “Habitudes of a 21st Century Learner. It should be very interesting.” According to Maiers website, Passion-Driven states education driven by passion awakens us to new learning and a world bigger than our-
selves. “This session will explore how the principles and practices of a passion-driven work — disciplined study, fostered imagination, active participation and community contribution — transform teaching,” added Grady. The event will also feature an update on the state of the city and county school systems from superintendents Lee Childress and Gina Rogers Smith, along with an update from the Commission on the Future of Alcorn County’s Education Task Force, door prizes and presentation of awards and gifts. Sponsors for the event include Magnolia Regional Health Center, the Pierce Foundation, ACE Power, Corinth Rotary Club, B&B Concrete, Caterpillar, CocaCola Bottling Works, Commerce National Bank, Little Properties, Daily Corinthian, Long Wholesale, Mississippi Polymers and Tull Brothers.
