A single family home is being called “inhabitable” after a Tuesday afternoon fire. According to Corinth Fire Department Training Officer Jerry Whirley, no one was inside the 1506 Meeks Street home at the time of the fire. “Smoke and flames were visible when firefighters arrived on the scene,” Whirley told the Daily Corinthian. “The fire remains under investigation, but we believe it started in the living room and was possibly caused by an electrical issue.” A dog tied to a front porch post was let loose by firefighters when they arrived, said Whirley. The pet was not injured.

The Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is working toward establishing a foundation to raise $1 million for the construction of a new shelter facility. The current building on Proper Street is said to predate the Civil War. “The roof is in terrible condition. The foundation is starting to go,” Director Charlotte Doehner told the Corinth Board of Aldermen Tuesday evening. “We need to get out of that building.” The organization is currently seeking a suitable location of 3 to 5 acres. The foundation, which will hold all donations, grants and endowments, will have a separate board of directors from that of the shelter. A number of fundraisers are anticipated in the fall to help reach the first hurdle of raising $100,000. “We will be able to then go to various foundations throughout the country and present our packages to them,” said Doehner. The shelter is interested in a modern building that can be an asset for the community. “Shelters today aren’t pole barns and sheds,” she said. “They are family activities facilities with beautiful colors, beautiful building, great design … a place to bring the kids to play. It’s much different than the way it’s been.” Doehner presented an overview of the past year’s activiPlease see SHELTER | 5A

‘Spamalot’ hits CT-A stage BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

“We eat ham, and jam, and Spam a lot.” Sixteen local thespians are set to bring the tongue-in-cheek performance of the Monty Python lovingly ripped musical, “Spamalot” to life on the Crossroads Playhouse stage for a special two weekend run. Inspired by the movie, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” Corinth Theatre-Arts will present the stage version on Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Showings are also set for Sunday at 2 p.m., and Aug. 11-12 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. The show will kickoff “A Season of Adventure!,” the 49th season at the playhouse. Former CT-A resident director R. Andrew Strickland will return to Corinth as guest director of the classic comedy. “If you’ve seen Holy Grail and liked it, you’ll love this play,” he said.

“While it centers around the original story line of the film, the play has a lot of surprises including several new musical numbers and a different ending.” “Spamalot” is a highly irreverent parody of the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. The show features the shenanigans of Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, as he recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest. The Broadway version of the play garnered three Tony Awards in 2005 including Best Musical. “I believe audiences will really enjoy this one,” said Strickland. “It’s flat out funny with an incredibly strong cast.” With only 16 cast members, Strickland said many cast members play multiple parts. Most of the cast also had to learn to tap dance for their performance. “The tap dancing is great, and it’s so Staff photo by Zack Steen amazing that the Corinth area has so James Strachan as Sir Dennis Galahad and Natalie Bullard Floyd as The Lady of the Lake star in Corinth Threate-Arts production of “Spamalot” set to open this weekend Please see SPAMALOT | 15A at Crossroads Playhouse.
