“The school year is about to start again, and we need people praying for all the precious children, from the youngest to the oldest, who are in our schools.”

Alcorn County unemployment rose to 5.4 percent in June, making the usual increase that follows the end of a school year. The rate was up from 4.7 percent in May but less than the 5.9 percent recorded in June 2016. Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted rate was nearly unchanged at 5 percent, rising 0.1 percent. Ranking 11th among the 82 counties for the month, Alcorn had 850 counted as unemployed, rising from 760 in May and decreasing from 940 a year ago. The county had 71 new claims for unemployment insurance, rising from 48 a year ago, and 345 continued claims, a decrease from 503 a year ago, according to the labor report released this week by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. Benefits paid in the county during the month totaled $52,999, falling from $83,024 a year ago. Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted non-farm employment decreased 1,400 over the month but was up 10,800 from one year ago. Registering the largest monthly employment losses were the government sector and the educational & health services sector. Jobless rates across the state ranged from 4.3 percent in Rankin County to 16.7 percent in Jefferson County. Unemployment rates were

“We started in 2009 when there was a greater need because no school in this area provided any free school supplies. We knew that was a issue and it opened the door for us to be able to show the community the love of Christ by giving those families in need school supplies.” Bill Chelmowski

It is a simple plea, and completely heartfelt. The call is being sent out for the faithful to gather and pray for the children of the community and those who will lead them during the school year. The 2017 Prayer Walk will be held at each school campus from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. “The school year is about to start again, and we need people praying for all the precious children, from the youngest to the oldest, who are in our schools,” said Kathryn Chapman, prayer coordinator for the Alcorn Baptist Association. This will be the 17th year for the event, in which residents are requested to come out to all campuses of the Alcorn County and Corinth School Districts and pray for the children, teachers, principals, superintendents and all other school district employees.
