Crossroads shoppers take advantage of tax holiday BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Crossroads area residents looking to save a buck shopped till they dropped this weekend as Mississippi held ira annual Back to School Sales Tax Holiday. Corinth Commons and South Gate Shopping Center were both crowded during the twoday event. Shoppers had a hard time finding a parking spot in front of Belk’s on Cass Street. Corinth mother Angela Swanson stopped by the department store around noon Saturday to pick up her daughter, Aubrey, some new Yellow Box shoes. “Tax free weekend is nice. It helps quite a bit,” said Swan-

son. “We did some shopping in Tupelo on Friday and it wasn’t as crowded as I thought it would be.” Young Aubrey, who got to pick out a new backpack during the savings weekend, will start the fifth grade at Corinth Middle School next week. “I’m not really looking forward to school starting back,” said Aubrey. “I wish it would stay summer.” Aubrey said she was looking forward to working on her new MacBook Air laptop computer when school kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 7. Corinth School District’s new eMerge technology program will place a MacBook Air laptop computer or Apple

iPad in the hands of every sixthtwelfth grade student. Several Corinth department stores offered special sales and other offers on top of the savings of not paying sales tax. Belk’s was one of a few stores that even extended their open hours to help out their customers. During the statewide twoday Sales Tax Holiday, sales tax wasn’t charged on clothing and footwear items, meant to be worn next to the body and cost less than $100 per item. Shoes, computers, school supplies, jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches and backpacks did not qualify for the Sales Tax Holiday.

SELMER, Tenn. — Corinth and Alcorn County was well represented by amateur photographers at this year’s Arts in McNairy Photo Contest. the closing reception on Aug. 15. “Refreshments will be served at the reception which is free to the public,” said Managing Director Paige Holmes. “We invite everyone to come out and see the work.” Corinth’s very own Bill Avery and Lisa Lambert walked away with top honors. Avery’s photo of local veteran and Harley Davidson rider Mac Gilmore entitled “Whiskers” won Best of Show. “I did a salute to the veteran’s exhibit at the American Legion and I

shot him for that exhibit. Later, I asked him to come out to my studio so I could shoot some more photos, which he did. ‘Whiskers’ came out of that session,” said Avery. In addition to winning Best in Show for “Whiskers”, Avery also captured First Place Moment for his photo, “Disagreement.” “It’s a picture I took of two seagulls in Alaska.
