A September bash is getting some cash. Funding for the 6th Annual Alcorn County Fair was approved by members of the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Board during its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday. “Everything is pretty much the same this year,” said fair committee member Zane Elliot, who spoke to the board along with fellow fair board member Danny Turner. “We are hoping to reach out a little further this year and test those waters.” The annual fair is set for Sept. 13-17 at the Crossroads Arena. “It’s good, clean entertainment,” added Elliot. “We

Another tool in the tool box. ACT Work Ready Communities is just that when it comes to linking workforce development to education. Dr. Ruth R. Nichols — assistant vice president for Community and Economic Development at Alcorn State University — presented the layout of the program to representatives from Alcorn, Prentiss and Tishomingo counties at Northeast at Corinth. “The program helps people bridge the skills gap,” said Dr.
Nichols on Wednesday during the ACT Work Ready Communities County Initiative. “ACT’s mission is helping people achieve education and workplace success.” The foundation of a community’s certification is based on individuals at the county level across the current, transitioning and emerging workforce earning a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) and employers recognizing the NCRC. The NCRC – a portable, industry-recognized credential – identifies an individual’s WorkKeys skills in reading for
information, applied math and locating information – skills required for 77 percent of jobs based on ACT JobPro database. Certification through the ACT Work Ready Communities Initiative is based on all participating states and counties adopting the ACT Common Criteria. “Everyone has a stake in this and we will need their help if we decide to pursue it,” said Gary Chandler, President and COO of The Alliance. “This is as much about helping industry recruitment as well as helping Please see WORKFORCE | 3

Elise Clark loves her customers. The 80-year-old is in charge of the salad bar during the day at The Dinner Bell – a job she has worked for 13 years. “I worked at CMC and all the other names it was called for 38 years until I was laid off,” she said. She was without a job for two years before landing at the restaurant. “I want to keep the salad bar looking good for the customers,” she shared. She has two children, four step-children, six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. “I don’t look at them as steps … they are mine,” she said. She also enjoys handing out hugs to customers. “The owner (Melissa Carson) doesn’t want me to ever stop doing that,” she said.
