Coleman talks transfers, consolidation BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

With the number of student transfer requests ever growing in the Alcorn School District, board president Mary Coleman is ready to combat the problem. “I think there needs to be a policy in place,” said Coleman following the regular monthly board meeting held earlier this week.

Coleman said she would like to see a new policy put in place that would limit the acceptable reasons for an approved student transfer. “It would need to be a policy that we phase in,” she said. “It would be unfair to students and parents to just drop a new rule on them.” Board member Russ Nash has said he is also in favor of a new transfer policy. He has been the

only board member who has voted against out of district transfers for more than one year. “We have to stop letting our students leave the district so easy,” said Nash. “We’re losing money every time it happens.” In the last two months, the board has approved more than 70 student transfers out of the district resulting in almost $400,000 in lost funds

from the state. Coleman also said she would like the board to start talking about combining schools within the district. “With 10 different campuses, it is getting increasingly hard to spread the funds we get,” she said. “We operate bare bones and we will Coleman

Adam Todd is all about putting the right people together. The Director of the Governor’s Job Fair Network is ready to help make the connection between companies and possible employees. Todd gets another chance when the annual Northeast Mississippi WIN Job Fair comes to the Crossroads Arena on Sept. 10.

“We are off to a good start,” said Todd of the five companies already committed to being at the job fair. “It’s all about getting the word out that this is effective.” Employers can register for the fair for a $150 fee.
