Community exceeds goal for Bishop Park BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

The community came through as it met — and even exceeded — its mission to raise $30,000 in 30 days to do something special for area children. The project was announced at a meeting held at John Street Community Center last month by C.A.R.E. Advisory Board member Orma Smith. He unveiled plans for a project which would install a much-needed new playground at E.S. Bishop Memorial Park. The project’s estimated cost is $45,000 and the C.A.R.E. Foundation seeded the fundraising with a check for $15,000, which Smith had said was the “second single biggest check C.A.R.E.’s ever written.”

The C.A.R.E. Board member emphasized that enthusiasm for the project within the community would be essential and community members would need to be willing to ask their family members, friends and churches to help contribute to the project. Smith then gave the community a mission — to come up with another $30,000 in 30 days. The donations are still coming in, but Smith reported over the weekend that the community donations to date have exceeded the original challenge by $5,000. With the overage, Smith said they would seek to add an additional pavilion to the park. He encouraged people to continue donating as new picnic tables and grills will be needed for the pavil-

“I have to say I agree with what Kim Ratliff said during the project’s kickoff when he said, ‘I think E.S. Bishop is smiling down on us.’ As I have gotten to know more about Mr. Bishop, I am so happy to see this park being restored to a condition more worthy of bearing his name.” Orma Smith C.A.R.E. Advisory Board member ions. Regarding the successful community mission, Smith said, “First of all, I want to thank God for allowing me to live in the best place in the world, and while I have gotPlease see PARK | 2A

The community accomplished its mission by raising $30,000 in 30 days to install a new playground at E.S. Bishop Memorial Park. The community exceeded its goal by at least $5,000 and organizers said they intend to use the extra funds to build an additional pavilion at the park.

Austin Robert Martin is happy to be a man on a mission. A May graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, the 2013 Corinth High School graduate recently enjoyed a visit to the city before reporting to the Basic Officer Leadership Course in Ft. Lee, Va., on July 9. After four months there, he heads to his first duty station in Ft. Stewart, Ga. He

is commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the ordnance branch. He is ready to be in the field. “I have a lot of people who come up to me and say, ‘I pray you don’t get deployed,’ “ said Austin. “ ‘I hope you don’t have to go into that godforsaken part of the world.’ But I spent four years in the classroom just talking about it. I’m ready to get out there and do something. All of my classmates are just chomping at

the bit, ready to get out there and do something. That’s what we’re meant to do.” The son of Mary Martin, he lived at the corner of Buchanan and Sixth Please see MARTIN | 2A
