Changes eyed for corporal punishment BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Injury collision One person was treated at the scene following a three-vehicle wreck on Wednesday at the intersection of Cass and Cruise streets. The accident happened around 1:50 p.m. and involved a Ford Taurus, Buick LeSabre and Chevrolet Equinox. The Taurus had some front end damage while the LeSabre suffered driver side damage. The Equinox had the most damage as it came to rest upside down.

Changes in corporal punishment could be on the horizon in the Alcorn School District. Board member Randy Wilbanks said this week he would like the district to change the policy dealing with paddling and remove a page from the student handbook requiring a parent signature. “I think if a child does something at school that deserves a paddling, they should get a paddling,” Wilbanks said Monday night. “I have had several teachers and prin-

cipals approach me about our corporal punishment policy. It seems like students may push the limits even more Wilbanks when they know their parents have signed not to punish them.” The handbook states: “As a matter of board policy, apPlease see POLICY | 2

Tumbling tradition continues in new locale BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

In an effort to reopen its historic park museum, Tishomingo State Park is looking for devoted volunteers to aid in cleanup. “With state park budgets tight and personnel in short supply, we depend on our Friends of the Park Volunteers,” said Assistant Park Manger Terry Harp. “Volunteers are needed to help clean and prepare the old museum building for new displays, repair the air conditioning system and keep the museum staffed on Saturdays during the visitor season.” “We will also need help with landscape and spruce up as there are a few shrubs to remove,” he added. Individuals, Scouts, churches, school groups and clubs are encouraged to pitch in. “We won’t really know what all is needed until we are able to

They started out as Bright Stars. A group of young girls are now pretty in pink as Sapphiret’z. The Pink Sapphiret’z are keeping the tumbling tradition going. The lone differences are a new name and studio. “We moved to the new studio in June,” said group co-director Leola King. “We are still a positive place for girls.” Since their move to the Pink Studio at 716 South Tate Street, the group has turned in a pair of firstplace finishes in competitions in Cape Girardeau, Missouri ,and Florence, Alabama. Another trip to Missouri and a competition in Atlanta are part of the future plans for the Pink Sapphiret’z. “We have done really well since moving to the new studio,” said King. “Several people in the community really helped get it ready.” King and her staff of Maleka Harris, Jana Smith and Marnesha Green cover such things with the girls as peer pressure and bullying. They also provide a resume, scholarship and goal setting workshop and also take them on college tours. The Pink Sapphiret’z were recently able to purchase some new uniforms through proceeds left over from fundraisers. “We use fundraisers to put back into what we do in the community,” said King. The Pink Sapphiret’z – the first official AAU team in the area – do a community service project twice a month. Shadarriana Stewart was re-
