Leaders hear ideas for a better city BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
A group of city leaders heard from a consultant Tuesday about plans, codes, urban design and other factors that help to shape a more visually appeal-
ing and prosperous city. Representing the Orion Planning Group, Robert L. Barber met with Mayor Tommy Irwin; Aldermen Andrew “Bubba” Labas, Mike Hopkins and J.C. Hill; Director of Community
Development and Planning Dave Huwe; and City Clerk Vickie Roach. Barber, former director of planning for Hernando, talked about how city planning works, what the benefits are from an

economic development perspective and some initial observations about Corinth. “We’re trying in the city planning realm to build cities that are quality spaces that people love and want to be in,” he said.
BY JEBB JOHNSTON FARMINGTON — Two juveniles were injured after a vehicle flipped on County Road 217 Monday evening. Farmington Officer David Nunley said it happened about 6:47 p.m. when the Nissan Altima topped a hill and swerved, apparently because of an oncoming vehicle, and went off the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle flipped a couple of times, landing upside down in a ditch near house 191, he said.
Kossuth High’s FFA team preps for nationals BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
KOSSUTH — It’s back to school for most next month. Kossuth High School’s FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team has already been cramming after winning the state championship in the spring.
KHS’ title earned them a trip to the Bluegrass State in late October. The team will compete in the national contest on Oct. 28-31 in Louisville, Kentucky. “Parliamentary Procedure provides structure to meetings of all kinds,” said team member Kayla Mercer. “Having a meet-
ing without parliamentary procedure is like sailing without a compass, you spend a lot time getting nowhere.” Kossuth claimed state gold at the Parliamentary Procedure Career Development event at Please see FFA | 2A

Barber showed an economic analysis of a downtown mixed use environment versus the sprawling development associated with big-box retailers.
Because law enforcement was waiting to verify some information, names were not released. The newspaper learned those involved were Carlie Phelps and Steelie Mincy. Nunley said one was airlifted to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., with leg injuries. The other was taken to Magnolia Regional Health Center. The Farmington VFD and Alcorn Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene. “I appreciate all of the help from the bystanders that were helping,” said Nunley.

Corinth teacher and actor adds novelist to his resume BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
“The Conundrum”
Taking steps to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a published author, Corinth writer, teacher and actor Philip Henson has penned his first novel, “The Conundrum.” Recently entered in Amazon’s Kindle Scout competition, the book relates the struggles of Jefferson Allen, a man who has suffered five years of torture since the disappearance of a dear friend’s unique son. Hiding in obscurity while toiling away as a deputy in the Appalachian Mountains of Georgia, he is confronted by his past when a young famous Civil Justice blogger interviews him for a
story. Their journey into the deputy’s past, takes them back to Mississippi where Allen is forced to face the demons he helped spawn. Tackling the corrupt power structure in his former hometown means betraying an arrangement that endangers his estranged wife and children as well as the life of his beautiful new partner. An intense mystery/suspense novel, “The Conundrum” takes the reader on an emotional ride through three Southern States in a modern Civil Rights tale with unexpected twists and turns. “Civil Rights have changed greatly in the past twenty years
in the South. Unfortunately, like much of the country, there remains intense prejudice beneath the surface. The prejudice is often devastatingly hidden beneath a mask of apparent acceptance. The struggle is real and frequently goes unmentioned in the pews and classrooms of states like Mississippi,” said Henson. “The right to live in peace and equality regardless of class, sexuality or social acceptance remains unclaimed. ‘The Conundrum’ digs beneath the surface of a modern civil rights dilemma that makes most cringe to admit exists. Not fully realized until Philip Henson
