Stonie claimed his third straight title in the event by eating 43 slugburgers to down rival Joey “Jaws Chestnut by a single burger for a second consecutive year. “They were less crispy this time, said Stonie. “I have been training year around and so far this has been my best year. “He found the rhythm quick, said Chestnut, who downed 42 slugburgers. “The slugburgers are hard to swallow and he got out to a lead that I couldn’t make up. Stonie, ranked second in Major League Eating, gained his second win versus Chestnut, the world’s top eater, in the last three months. He previously downed Chestnut at a gyro-eating contest in May. “I was watching Joey all the time, said Stonie. “A world record wouldn’t have meant anything unless I beat him. Stonie set the previous mark for eating slugburgers in 10 minutes

The city’s purchase of a strip of property for right of way brings the South Parkway and Highway 72 intersection upgrade closer to fruition. The Board of Aldermen this week approved the purchase of the land alongside South Parkway on the former Golden Rule restaurant property for approximately $43,000. It is needed to accommodate the widening of South Parkway on the north side of the highway. Matthew Estes of Cook Coggin said the project is now at the stage of getting all of the paperwork finalized with the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The bid process will follow. The approximately $325,000 project includes milling and resurfacing a portion of the
