It’s a crime to destroy political signs BY MARK BOEHLER editor@dailycorinthian.com
People who like to destroy or steal political signs might want to smile as they are committing the crime. At least one local candidate
who grew tired of signs being stolen set up a motion-censored game camera and caught the culprits on digital film. Corinth Police Chief Ralph Dance shared the story, but it wasn’t quite clear if the candi-
date was going to press charges. But he could. Stealing signs is a misdemeanor petty larceny charge, while destroying signs is a misdemeanor malicious mischief charge. Both carry a fine and/or
days in jail, noted Dance. “We get complaints all the time,” said the police chief. At least one local candidate who contacted the newspaper reported four large signs had been destroyed.
Even Dance was a victim four years ago when he ran for sheriff. Three large signs were destroyed at Kossuth, costing Dance $300. Please see SIGNS | 2A

Athletic Association Executive Committee’s decision a few weeks ago to enforce the rule. Only Mississippi residents will be able to participate in MHSAA-sanctioned events. It came to the attention of the Corinth School District Please see RULING | 3A

The greasy, sweaty spectacle took a mere 10 minutes. The result was a reclaimed title at the 4th Annual World Slugburger Eating Championship for world number one Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, who downed 33 White Trolley slugburgers in 10 minutes at the depot Saturday afternoon. The resident of San Jose, Calif., pocketed the top prize money but fell short of setting a world record. He needed to down 10 more of Corinth’s signature burger to set a new high mark to go alongside his other 37 world eating records. The competition was stiff,
with gastronomical heavyweights boasting statistics like 8 pounds of frozen yogurt consumed in six minutes and 253 oysters in five minutes competing for the slugburger crown. Finishing second in the Major League Eating-sanctioned event to claim a piece of the $3,000 purse was Juan “More Bite” Rodriguez of Chicago with 23 slugburgers eaten. Third was a tie between “Nasty” Nate Biller of Keller, Texas, and Mike Whities of Brandon with 13 slugburgers. Fifth place and down among the 10 competitors took home nothing but the aftermath of Please see FESTIVAL | 2A
IUKA — Award-winning photographer Christi Germann has never let anything hold her back. A high school graduate in 1987, Germann was involved in a vehicle wreck in her native Illinois. “It happened about one month after graduation,” she said. The vehicle rolled over and crushed young Germann. Her friend, who was driving the vehicle, was unhurt. Germann’s back was broken and her spinal cord was severely damaged. “I actually died three times in the hospital,” she said. Germann fought back and learned how to cope with her future in a wheelchair. “People often think just be-
