American Legion Post 6 Ladies Auxiliary members Sheila McDaniel (left) and Rose Pike sort coupons to be sent to military families as part of the “Coupons for Troops” program.

Local pastors and church officials are bringing to the forefront the issues surrounding church safety, in wake of the heartbreaking shootings of nine members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. “In our 10 or 11 years at this location, we have never really had a problem and would like to keep it that way,” said Associate Pastor Dyer Harbor of Oakland Baptist Church. “We have several layers of security both inside and outside to ensure safety and offer peace of mind to our members and

guests.” In order to be proactive, the church has formed a safety team to patrol the parking lot, monitor rooms and hallways and to review security footage. “When we first moved to our new location, we had an agency from Memphis come out,” said Harbor. “They surveyed the area, gave us some tips and even provided us with training.” In comparison, Ball Hill M.B. Church has not yet taken additional measures. “We really aren’t taking any extra precautions as far as security at this time bePlease see SAFETY | 2A

Effort collects coupons for troops Crowd attends Jacinto BY STEVE BEAVERS

Sheila McDaniel had her calculator in hand. The American Legion Post 6 Ladies Auxiliary member needed it with thousands of coupons left to count. McDaniel and fellow auxiliary members Carlean Parker and Rose Pike were busy getting together coupons to send to military families as part of the “Coupons for Troops” campaign. “This is our second year to do it,” said Parker as she added up a stack of coupons.

Parker found out about the program through a website and quickly incorporated it into the auxiliary’s plans to help military families. “Coupons for Troops” uses both in-date and expired coupons. Coupons can be used up to six months past their expiration date. “Expired coupons are sent to commissaries overseas while the in-date ones are delivered instate,” said Parker. The Ladies Auxiliary collects, separates and then sends the coupons to a docking station in Florida.

According to one website involved in sending coupons to military personnel, the most important coupons are for food supplies with the second priority being baby supplies. Only manufacturer’s coupons can be used and they can be from newspaper, dispensers in grocery stores, tear-pads, and elsewhere, as long as they state “Manufacturer’s Coupon” on them. No store coupons such as Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, Walgreens, etc. can be used. Please see COUPONS | 2A

JACINTO — Mother nature couldn’t dampen the patriotic spirit as an estimated crowd of 1,000 gathered around the historic Jacinto Courthouse on Independence Day to celebrate the 36th Annual Jacinto Festival. Despite the drizzle, the festivities went on as planned bringing out young and old alike to enjoy the fun and political speaking. As she surveyed the colorful booths and craft vendors with

three of her grandchildren in tow, Nancy Dixon-Braddock of Burnsville paused to greet friends and loved ones. A familiar face among the crowd, Braddock has attended the festival every year for as long as she can remember. “I know I have been attending for at least 30 years. It is a part of our heritage,” she said. “I look forward to it each July because it is something different and interesting to do. I love to see the crowds Please see JACINTO | 2A
