Troopers keeping roads safe on holiday weekend BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
Keeping safety in mind, The Mississippi Highway Patrol began their 2016 Fourth of July Holiday Enforcement Period at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 1 and will conclude at midnight on Monday, July 4. Anticipating a heavy traffic flow throughout the magnolia state, all available troopers will be assigned saturation patrols in an effort to maximize visibility and reduce traffic crashes. Motorists are cautioned to remember that the fine will be increased for drivers who are caught texting. As of Friday, July 1, the fine will increase from $25 to $100 and will be strictly enforced to combat distracted driving. Safety checkpoints will be
established during the period in a proactive attempt to remove distracted and impaired drivers from the roadways and to promote seatbelt usage. “We are asking motorists to join with us in making the roadways safer in Mississippi and to help allow families to have a joyous holiday weekend,” said Captain Johnny Poulos, director of the Public Affairs Division of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. According to Poulous, in 2015, MHP investigated 138 crashes with two fatalities and made 125 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems throughout the holiday period. Troopers are hopeful that
