Wreck claims life of Alcorn woman BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Peggy Elizabeth Miles was on her way home from her regular coffee drinking spot. That Tuesday evening last week would take a tragic turn for the 63-year-old just west of the Corinth city limits as a car crossed in front of her on Highway 72. She was headed home after drinking coffee

at the 45 South Truck Stop, according to family members. Miles, a 63-year-old resident of Highway 72 in western Alcorn County, died early Monday at Regional One in Memphis as the result of injuries sustained in the wreck. Funeral services are set for noon Thursday at Magnolia Funeral Home. The wreck happened about

11:35 p.m. at U.S. Highway 72 and County Road 735. The Mississippi Highway Patrol said it appeared Brandi Lewellen, 25, was traveling south on Road 735 in a 2001 Olds Aurora and attempted to cross the highway, entering the path of the eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Miles. Both women were taken to the Regional Medical Center in Mem-

phis. Lewellen’s injuries were categorized as moderate while Miles had life-threatening injuries. An autopsy will be performed. Miles was a retired independent insurance agent. The family will remember her as an outgoing personality who enjoyed making others laugh. Please see MILES | 2

Departments combine to fight blaze BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Volunteer firemen with five different departments were able to extinguish a Monday fire before things got out of control. “Smoke was coming out from under the roof,” said Union Center Fire Chief H.C. Bates after arriving on scene. Bates was one of the first to

arrive at the fire at 203A County Road 619. The initial call came across at 11:18 a.m. and firemen were on scene at 11:22. The two-bedroom home is owned by L.C. and Delores Moore. Their daughter and two grandchildren live in the home and weren’t home at the time of the fire. “We sent two guys in the

home and were able to knock it down in a little over an hour,” said Southwest Fire Chief John Fair. “The heaviest fire was in the laundry room.” Union Center, Kossuth, Southwest, Biggersville Fire & Rescue and Biggersville Rehab, Alcorn County Emergency Services and the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call.

Community leaders gathered Monday afternoon to hear the beginning steps of Corinth’s Healthy Hometown Initiative. C.A.R.E. Foundation board member Orma Smith kicked off the program by asking the crowd of officials from the local schools, city and county government officials, Magnolia Regional Health Center executives and other important community leaders one question. “Does Corinth and Alcorn County have what it takes to become one of Mississippi’s healthiest hometowns?” Smith asked. Smith said the C.A.R.E. board met in January to brain storm goals for the community. “Everyone agreed, community wellness is the next step in making this area become more industry friendly,” Smith said. “Before an industry picks a site to build a new factory, they look at the health of the area’s workforce and the wellness options in the community.”

About three years ago Smith was at a meeting in Jackson, Tenn., when community leaders first began talking about how to change their community wellness status. One of those leaders was Lisa Piercey, vice president of physician services at West Tennessee Healthcare. Piercey would become one of the forefront leaders who helped shape Jackson’s wellness scene. “In the early 2000s, downtown Jackson was destroyed by a tornado and for most of the next decade, the area was a wasteland,” said Piercey. “With help from two developers who cared deeply for the community and a few grants, West Tennessee Healthcare now operates the 84,000 square foot LIFT Wellness Center in downtown Jackson.” The concept was born out of a West Tennessee Healthcare initiative called Living in a Fit Tennessee (LIFT) that combines medical fitness, lifestyle education and a communitywide focus to deliver an improved quality of life to the Please see WELLNESS | 2

TVA offers cost-cutting tips BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The Tennessee Valley Authority has some tips for customers who want to control energy costs when temperatures begin to rise. “Cool Your Wallet” is the latest campaign of TVA and local power companies it serves to keep costs down during the dog days of summer.

“Hot and humid summer weather traditionally leads to the time of year when utility bills are the highest across the valley,” said Chris Stanley, TVA Public Relations. “Summer is also the time where TVA can see the biggest strain on its electric grid.” According to Stanley, TVA Please see ENERGY | 2
