Bryant tours industrial sites Church

to honor servants

BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The Alliance got a chance to show off an available industrial site to the state’s top leader. Gov. Phil Bryant and Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Glenn McCullough Jr. toured parts of Northeast Mississippi RailHub South on Wednesday afternoon. The 141-acre site is located on County Road 220 just off Kimberly-Clark Parkway and between Norfolk Southern’s mainline railroad and Pioneer Railroad’s short line. “What you have done is doing what the governor wants you to do and that is take the bull by the horns,” said McCullough. “This is a good capacity for growth and I promise the MDA will be there for you … this gives us something to sell.” Gov. Bryant and McCullough were updated about the site by Sen. Rita Potts Parks, Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter and Alliance members Reece Terry, Robert Williams and Brett Marlar. “Any time you get someone from Jackson to see what you have to offer is good,” said Carpenter. “They are spending six hours on the ground in the area and when you see something face-to-face it adds a different perspective.” “The key point is Glenn hasn’t had a chance to tour northeast Mississippi and we wanted to make an impression on him,” added Potts Parks. “It was critical to us.” Bryant and McCullough also visited Mississippi Silicon in Burnsville and met with Yellow Creek leadership in Iuka. “I have seen lots of land and this is a good site,” said Bryant. “I’m in and now we are going to find someone to go on it.” “TVA loves this site and is sold on it,” added Terry. McCullough, the mayor of Tupelo from 1997-1999, was appointed to the Tennessee Valley Authority board by former President Bill Clinton. Former President George W. Bush appointed him chairman of the board in 2001.

Biographer David E. Weaver was awestruck upon first hearing the stand-out voice of American operatic soprano Ruby Pearl Elzy (1908–1943) as she performed her signature song “My Man’s Gone Now”– a piece she made famous in the original “Porgy and Bess. “Yes, her voice was indeed beautiful, vibrant and expressive, but there was something more,” wrote Weaver in the preface to his new book “Black Diva of the Thirties: The Life of Ruby Elzy.” “I had never heard a voice like it. I was hooked.” Five long years of searching, researching, interviewing and writing followed Weaver’s first introduction to the inspiring voice that would remain with Please see ELZY | 2

More than 225 cats at shelter need homes It’s “Kit-Cat Mania” at the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter. The shelter is experiencing a higher than normal cat and kitten population, and staff members are offering special rates to help find ‘fur’-ever homes for the felines. More than 225 cats are ready for adoption ranging in age from 10 months to four years. Currently there are 141 kittens available. “We have many different types of kittens available -- long hair, short hair. We have tuxedos and tabbies, lots of different cuties to choose from,” said volunteer director Charlotte Doehner. “Our kitten population grew mostly because we had 13 mama cats dropped at the shelter from the county.” Through the July 4 weekend, adoption rates for kittens and indoor adult cats are $10, while

Touched by the outpouring of love and support for slain Hattiesburg officer Liquori Tate, Bro. Nelson Hight, pastor of the Church of the Crossroads felt convicted to do something more for those who serve and protect. Bearing witness to a 16-mile sea of blue with thousands turning out for the funeral procession which would ultimately transport the fallen officer to his final resting place, Hight was struck by the powerful vision of mourners as they paid tribute. “I watched in awe as people stood, waving flags and singing patriotic songs, each with their hands above their heart,” said the pastor. “As they gave thanks to the Lord for his many contributions, I wondered why we wait until our law enforcement officers have passed before we choose to honor them.” It was this profound revelation that would spark the idea to designate the church’s first ever “Blue Day”. Dedicated to local police officers, first responders, sheriffs, deputies, fireman, and EMS in North Mississippi and surrounding areas, the patriotic celebration will be held on Sunday, July 5 with services at 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. “We invite families to attend because we want children to have the opportunity to see their parents being honored for their service and dedication to others,” said the pastor. “It is our hope to make it a memorable day they will cherish.” The pastor and congregation are excited to host Blue Day and hope it will be the first of many.
