Cochran barely takes Alcorn County BY JEBB JOHNSTON

See statewide results, page 7A

jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran held onto Alcorn County, but just barely, as voter turnout rose for the heated runoff. In results certified by the party executive committee about 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Alcorn County Courthouse, Cochran

carried the county with 1,855 votes (50.18 percent) to Chris McDaniel’s total of 1,842 votes. Cochran had the edge for some time as the votes rolled in, but the tide turned in favor of McDaniel, the district 42 state senator from Ellisville, as the

last four boxes arrived in the circuit clerk’s office. McDaniel won the machine totals 1,7571,714, but Cochran had enough of a lead in the 207 absentee ballots to pull back ahead (134 to McDaniel’s 73). Nineteen affidavit ballots were also added to the total. Cochran’s edge over McDan-

iel in the county was whittled down from the 139-vote margin in the first primary. McDaniel carried nine of the 17 county precincts and saw his biggest leads at non-city boxes. He carried Bethel (14-9), Biggersville (85-68), Central (182131), Five Points (230-152), Glen (96-92), Jacinto (39-31),

Rienzi (145-78), Union Center (100-70) and Shady Grove (9482). The veteran senator carried College Hill (70-63), Pinecrest (99-80), East Corinth (289182), Kossuth (175-142), North Corinth (212-160), South Please see RUNOFF | A2

Park chooses new director Escaped prisoners face more charges BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

New charges have been filed against two inmates who escaped from the Alcorn County Regional Correctional Facility on Sunday. Murder suspect Sirdon Capanion Greer, 28, and rape suspect Garnett Denzell Hughes, 25, have both been charged with felony jail escape and assault on a correctional officer. Several agencies combined to take the two back into custody following their afternoon escape over the weekend. Hughes, incarcerated at the correctional facility on two counts of kidnapping and two counts of armed robbery, overpowered a security guard to start the escape plans. “While being returned from his exercise time, he overpowered the guard and took his keys and radio, said Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Reggie Anderson. “Once he had the keys, he opened Greer’s cell and let him out. Both inmates were being housed in the segregated portion of the facility prior to the escape. Segregation means one inmate per cell. “Things have now been

upgraded, said Roger Settlemires, security chief of the facility. “Two guards will be with each inmate all the time and their hands and ankles will be handcuffed. Hughes and Greer escaped the facility around 2:40 p.m. Greer was apprehended about 15 minutes later on Norman Road. Hughes, of Belzoni, was free for almost six hours before being found off County Road 402 near James Newcomb Trucking at 8:15 p.m., according to Anderson. Anderson said Hughes sustained a few brier scratches during the escape. “Due to the seriousness of the crimes, it was important to get them back in custody as soon as possible, said Anderson. “We Please see ESCAPEES | 2A

Local competing in Miss United States BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Miss Mississippi United States TaNechi Temple is preparing for the trip of a lifetime. The 2009 Corinth High School graduate will travel from Corinth to Washington, D.C. on June 30 in order to compete in the Miss United States competition. The pageant will take place July 1-6, drawing young women from across the nation. She will compete in different phases of competition, including interview, fitness, evening gown, on-stage question and a runway competition. This week will be filled with appearances where she will sign autographs, participate in a parade, tour the Capitol and attend sponsored events. “I think the preparation is more about mental stability than anything else, said Temple, who is looking forward to her first trip to D.C. “I’ve

been practicing good eye contact, studying up on Mississippi facts and current events so I can to be ready for interviews with the judges. In a world based on superficial appearances, where beauty is only skin deep, Temple challenges that notion. “For me it’s about being comfortable with who I am on the inside and embracing my flaws, she said. “I’m a very short person, so I just wear higher heels. Using her platform, “Finding a Voice to support and empower victims of abuse, the advocate has partnered with R.A.I.N.N (Rape Abuse Incest National Network) to conquer the shame and end the silence of those in need of a champion. “R.A.I.N.N. is the largest anti-assault network in the country, said Temple who also serves as a celebrity spokesperson for The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “I chose this as my platform because

it hits home for me personally. “My position as Miss Mississippi U.S. allows me to promote different campaigns I’m working on, she added. Partnering with Verizon Wireless, the 23-year-old promotes their “Hope Lines program, which refurbishes donated cell phones and supplies them to domestic violence victims for emergency use. “My goal is to start a local chapter to get people talking about this and establish resources to help, possibly in coordination with shelters in Mississippi, said the Corinth native, who recently returned from a trip to Branson, Mo., where she had the opportunity to speak to 60 to 80 girls at Kids Across America. When it comes to preparing for pageants, Temple said the best advice she can give is that each contestant Please see TEMPLE | 2A
