Voters heading to polls Tuesday BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Alcorn County’s 17 voting precincts will open Tuesday for the Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel runoff in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
It is the only race on the ballot and one that is stirring more interest than an average midterm congressional primary runoff. “It looks like we’re going to have more people to vote Republican this time than we did
last time, said Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell. He said absentee votes have recently averaged more than 20 per day. The office had issued 193 absentee ballots as of Friday afternoon, including those
mailed out but not necessarily returned. He expects Alcorn County voters to cast about 3,000 ballots, possibly a little more. Turnout in the first primary, including Republican and Demo-
cratic races, was 3,359, with about 2,600 of those voting in the Republican primary. In the neck-and-neck June 3 voting, Thad Cochran carPlease see RUNOFF | 6A

The task force also worked to increase educational opportunities in the area and to increase competitiveness to reach international standards. “The task force focused on improving graduation rates and lowering dropout rates, said Corinth School District Superintendent Lee Childress. “Alcorn improved it’s graduation rate to 77.5 and Corinth improved its graduation rate to 92.2. Childress co-chairs the EdPlease see COMMISSION | 2A

Deputy Chief John Beavers of the Glen Volunteer Fire Department painted a picture of his most horrifying day on the job. “I arrived at the scene to find a threebedroom, 2,000 square foot brick home in Rienzi showing heavy fire, said Beavers. “When dealing with a structure fire, the best way to save the house is to go inside, you can’t just douse it with water from the outside. After entering the residence with Brandon Please see BEAVERS | 3A
