Curlee House roof, foundation fixed BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission hopes it has won the battle against deterioration of the VerandahCurlee House. With the grant-funded structural restoration complete, the roof and foundation are back in
good form. “I don’t think the house will move or fall in for at least another 100 years, said Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission Chair Rosemary Williams. She hopes to see the home open again next spring or summer. In the new foundation, the
piers under the porch are now positioned under the columns to prevent the sagging that occurred before. “The piers all now have steel center cores, said Williams. “It looks exactly like it did, but it’s stronger. Before the interior work begins, some plumbing and elec-
trical upgrades are needed. “We were shocked to learn that the electricity we’ve had all these years was the old knob and tube wiring from 1929, said Williams. “We thought, we can’t do all of this work and have the house burn down. Some work on the other buildings on the property is needed,
and the public restrooms must be put back into use. Americans with Disabilities Act requirements must also be met before the home can reopen. The inside of the home has held up well. “We do have some peeling Please see REPAIRS | 2A

Guests can enjoy a catfish dinner as they indulge in a glass of wine, courtesy of the Twisted Cork. “We’re going to try pairing different wines with great southern-style catfish, said Chef Luke Doehner. “So, be sure to bring your friends and family. The cost to attend the wine tasting and catfish dinner is $15 per person. All proceeds from the event will benefit the shelter. Those who wish to attend should call 662-286-3325 to make reservations. “This event is just one of the many fund-raisers the animal shelter does year round. My wife, volunteer director Charlotte Doehner and volunteer coordinator Mary Schafer come up with a lot of really great ideas to raise money, said Doehner. “I think it’s a feather in our cap to have them back in town, said Alderman J.C. Hill. The Northeast Mississippi Chapter, which is based in Tupelo and began providing services to Alcorn County after the local chapter shut down, will use an office on the second floor of City Hall near the old municipal court clerk’s office. The vacant office was formerly used by police department staff. Chapter Manager Patty Tucker appeared before the Please see RED CROSS | 2A

The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center will host the special kids event on Saturday, the first day of summer, and on July 12. “We are excited to be able to offer these two Civil War Kids Days at the Interpretive Center this summer, said Supervisory Park Ranger Ashley Berry. “Children should really try to attend both days, as the July event will build upon the

MBS combats blood shortage with Road to Life drive on June 26 BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Mississippi Blood Services is combating a recent blood shortage by hosting the Road to Life 6 Blood Drive. MBS will have their familiar Donor Coach on site hosting a community blood drive in the Corinth Wal-Mart parking lot on June 26 from 12 to 6 p.m. All donors will receive a free t-shirt and a gift card, while supplies
last. “Blood donors are often a crucial part on a patient’s road to recovery, said MBS Vice President of Donor Systems Todd Sing. “They may never meet those patients who received their blood but the very fact blood was available means they helped save those lives. Sing said life is a journey fraught with detours and roadblocks like illnesses and inju-
ries. “Sometimes they become lifethreatening ... they turn into more than a bump in the road, Sing added. “Blood donors don’t take these road hazards away, they just make navigating them possible. Because blood donors do so much, MBS and Howard Wilson Chrysler Jeep Dodge are partnering for Road to Life 6 Blood Drive Promotion.
