Facility welcomes local candidates at July 25 event

Nathaniel Marc Tyra, 20, of Terry Street, Booneville was convicted Thursday evening of manslaughter in the heat of passion. The verdict came following a four-day trial in Prentiss County Circuit Court. Tyra was sentenced by Judge James Roberts Jr. to a total of 20 years in prison with five suspended and 15 to serve. Crossroads Arena is giving local candidates a chance to speak. The facility is opening its doors to a candidate public speaking on July 25 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We did one in 2011 and it was a pretty big event,” said arena event manager Cindy Davis. “Most candidate speakings are done outside, but by having it at the arena people will have a cool and convenient place to hear what candidates have to say.” Candidates will not be charged a fee to speak. There will be a pre-determined schedule and limit on how long each candidate can speak. “In another week or so the order of speaking will be determined,” added Davis. Close to 4,000 attended the first candidate speaking event held at the arena in 2011. “Our goal is to make this one big community event,” said Davis. Signage, sponsorships and other advertising are available. Vendors can set up for a fee of $50. Programs will also be available for purchase. “Purchasing a program allows voters to keep candidates fresh on their minds when it comes time to vote,” said the event manager. (For more information about the speaking event contact Davis at 662-287-7779 or via email at cdavis@crossroadsarena.com.)
