In the competitive world of economic development, keeping existing industries healthy is a top priority. The result is “they grow, you

grow, the state grows. That’s our approach,” said Mickey Milligan, the Mississippi Development Authority’s director for existing industry and business, in a talk before Corinth Rotary on Thursday.

Display it properly. A group of veterans are making the simple request when it comes to the American flag. “Most people do not know the proper manner,” said American Legion Post 6 Commander Tommy Watson.

The Flag Code was created to teach individuals the correct way to display the flag. People need to know the right procedure with Flag Day set for Sunday, according to Watson. “The Flag Code is U.S. law and specificly says the flag should not be used in advertising whatsoever,” said Watson.

The Alcorn Career & Technology Center has a knack for construction. The vocational school was recently named an Accredited Education and Training Facility by the Mississippi Construction Education Foundation. Out of the 106 secondary vo-tech centers in the state, ACTC becomes the 27th accredited by the group. “The Alcorn center has completed the approval process for recognition of its construction education program,” said Lane Bell, north director at MCEF. “They have meet over 200 standards, performed a self evaluation and were given the seal of approval from a select group construction and industry leaders who visited the campus.” Bell presented the Alcorn School Board of Education and ACTC director Rodney Hopper with a framed certificate honoring the achievement. Hopper will also receive several banners promoting the program to hang at the center. Founded in 1996 by the Mississippi legislative, MCEF

was created as The National Center for Construction Education and Research. The nonprofit organization’s goal is to help develop a safe and productive construction workforce in Mississippi with working with the Mississippi Department of Education. “We provide standardized construction and maintenance curriculum and assessments with portable credentials to schools across the state,” said Bell. At ACTC, the Manufacturing Fundamentals/Metal Fabrication high school class taught by Jesse Potts and the Construction/Basic Carpentry high school class taught by Fred Jackson each benefit from curriculum supplied by MCEF. “The school is now teaching a construction curriculum that is relevant, developed by industry, recognized internationally and competency based,” Bell added.”Graduates of the program are in a better position to enter the job market.” Bell said statistics show there will be more than 50,000 available construction related jobs in Mississippi by the end of 2016.
