Celebration set for KES auditorium BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

KOSSUTH — A date has been set to celebrate. The first day of August will be the time community members come together and mark renovations made to the Kossuth Elementary School auditorium. “We are going to have an official ceremony for the community to come out and see what we have done,” said Anthia Follin-King, a member of the committee formed to raise funds for the renovations. A ribbon cutting is set for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, August 1. The auditorium was closed in 2010 after engineers deemed the building unsafe

and school officials chained the doors. New Alcorn School District Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell informed the school board of a plan to reopen the building. “I think once it’s finished, the auditorium will be as nice as any facility built in 1936,” said Mitchell. “It was a tremendous effort to raise the money and it speaks well of our community.” A majority of the $28,000 raised was done during a kickoff event to reopen the building on April 9. On Thursday, workers with Gerald Parks Hardwood were busy working on the flooring of the auditorium. Once the flooring is finished, the next step will be painting the building.

Tishomingo County native John W. Young loves to hunt for antiquity. “I’ve been collecting Iuka memorabilia for more than 25 years,” said Young. “I grew up hunting Indian artifacts and Civil War relics with my dad. I remember one Sunday evening, my Dad and I dug up a cannon ball on the hill overlooking the Tennessee River at Eastport – needless to say I was headed to a world of collecting.” Some of his most beloved items are found in his collection of antique bottles. Among the collection, is a 1850‘s A.M.A. Simmons liver Medicine bottle. He said, “I really don’t have an overall favorite bottle in my collection – I generally like the one that I got last, until I receive another.” The 54-year-old has shown his collection across the country many times and has also been featured in several national books and magazines.

edy was inspired to promote awareness of bullying. “I really wanted to capture people’s attention and cause them to think about how they relate to others and what effect their words and actions can have.” Featuring a cast of over 20 local actors and actresses, the film is a powerful, heart wrenching, movie picture filled with unexpected plot twists. “The storyline will leave you emotional and astonished,” said Dean. “The cast, myself, the assistant director, the editors, camera and makeup crews and many others have worked extremely hard to bring this movie to life and we can’t wait to see everyone at Please see MOVIE | 2A

“We are hoping to be done by the middle of July,” said Follin-King. Updates to seating and lighting are also slated to be complete in the future. “I am so thrilled,” said new KES Principal Charla Essary of the work. “The building it so important to the community and a lot of people have worked hard to see it restored.” Metal plates were added to a number of 60-foot wooden support beams which engineers said were bowing in the 2010 report. Seating will be close to 500 once all improvements are made. “We continued to have
