Jacinto awaits large turnout BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Jacinto is getting ready for one of the big ones. It’s four weeks until the annual Jacinto Fourth of July Festival, which is expected to attract a huge turnout with county and state elected offices at stake this year. Even an “off” political season like last year drew an estimated crowd of 4,000 to 5,000 to the usually quiet grounds of Jacinto, where the historic courthouse stands as a reminder of the days of the “Old State
of Tishomingo.” As a political speaking venue, it is a reliable draw, earning it the reputation as the state’s second largest. “The invitations have been sent, and we are beginning to hear back from some of the state candidates,” said Beth Whitehurst, the Jacinto Foundation’s executive director. Many local candidates are already on the list. The speaking will have three co-chairmen — Chancery Clerk Bobby Marolt, Farmington Please see JACINTO | 6A

happy to be able to provide them with another retail space inside the district,” said Trey Albright, who along with business partner Stuart Green started the resurrect recently seen in the downtown area just south of the railroad tracks. “It’s great to see a hometown business grow. They started out in a 300-square-foot space on Fillmore, then moved into a 3,000 foot space. Now they are about to expand into this building with 4,800-square-

The SoCo District is growing ... again. Renovation work began earlier this month on the circa 1900s building at the corner of Wick and Taylor Street in downtown Corinth. Current SoCo District apparel retailer Shirley Dawg’s will move across the block into the new location this fall. “Brian and Julie Shirley needed to expand and we’re
feet of retail space, plus office space. It’s very exciting for us and them.” Although Albright doesn’t know the detailed history on the building, he said it was previously used as an auto parts store and manufacturing facility before sitting dormant for more than 10 years. “I believe it was built as a five and dime or general merchandise store,” said Albright. TUPELO — Gov. Phil Bryant has appointed a new district attorney for seven counties in northeast Mississippi. John Weddle of Tupelo will serve the final few months of a term started by fellow Republican Trent Kelly, who was elected last week to the U.S. House. Bryant announced Weddle’s appointment Friday. “He is a tough and experienced prosecutor who has a demonstrated history of serving
the region with integrity, and I am confident he will continue to dedicate himself to the people of north Mississippi,” Bryant said. Weddle is an assistant district attorney under Kelly in Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss and Tishomingo counties. Weddle will serve until January, and had already qualified to run for district attorney this year. Two Democrats — Arch BulPlease see WEDDLE | 3A
Yard Sale benefits museum BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
The Crossroads Museum is turning to a sale to help make the save. The Daily Corinthian/Crossroads Museum Community Yard Sale will give area residents a chance to get rid of some unneeded items and benefit the museum at the same time. “This is something we have been talking about for a couple of years,” said Crossroads Museum Director Brandy Steen. “We have the area to do it and wanted to get the community involved.” Proceeds from 10x10 booth spaces will benefit the campaign to house a 1924 Corinth fire truck. Booth space is $20. “For us to take the truck, we have to have a place to store it,” said Steen. The yard sale will be held Saturday, June 27 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the CARE Garden and Historic Depot. “Unlike Green Market, the yard sale will not be governed,” said Steen. “People will be able to sell what they want.” Items such as clothing, furniture, glassware, antiques, toys, electronics, hand-
crafted items, baked and food goods and commercial products are a sample of things which can be sold. “We have even had some politicians request a booth,” added Steen. As of Thursday, around 20 had signed up for the sale. “We are shooting for at least 40, but I would like to see what we have now tripled,” added the museum director. Registration deadline is Friday, June 26 at 4 p.m. Those interested can sign up online at crossroadsmuseum.com. Setup time is 5:30-7:30 a.m. the day of the sale. Space is limited and sellers must bring their own tables, chairs and tents.
