Bearden wishing for others BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Wishes matter. It was the message being delivered Saturday at American Legion Post 6. Bryce Bearden and “Bryce’s Wish Warriors” were out to raise enough money to help Make-A-Wish Mid-South be able to grant more wishes to children and their families. “This is not about Bryce,” said his grandmother, Paula Grimes as she took a break from the Ride for Wishes event. “Today is about the next kid who deserves a wish.” Bearden and his family went to work on the project after finding out Make-A-Wish Mid-South was unable to find a wish sponsor in the area. “As soon as we got back from Bryce’s wish, we decided to do something,” said Grimes. “We are looking at doing this every year and we hope to find a corporate sponsor to help.” Make-A-Wish Mid-South made Bryce’s wish come true last year. The quartet – Bryce, his mother Sara Langston, his brother Clay and Grimes – spent a week in Hawaii. “We got to be a normal family during the week and not have to worry about any medical stuff,” added Grimes. Los Cazadores, a motorcycle club from Memphis, was responsible for making Bryce’s wish come true. “I want other kids to have the same feeling as I did in Hawaii,” said Bearden, a 16-yearold student at Alcorn Central High School. “I want them to be able to go somewhere they have never been and to not

Lodge brings patients hope BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Dealing with cancer is never easy. Most times the road to fight the disease is a long and bumpy one. The American Cancer Society (ACS) has provided a place where patients can find hope when away from home taking treatments. The Hope Lodge gives patients and their caregivers a place to stay free as they undergo treatments in another city. “It is a very relaxing place for cancer patients,” said Cathy

MRHC first to provide new cancer screening Magnolia Regional Health Center will now be offering the latest in breast cancer screening advances, Genius 3D Mammography exams, developed by Hologic, Inc., a worldwide leader in women’s health. Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, Genius exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, while simultaneously decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing. In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. Coming off one of their best month’s ever, the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is extending a special adoption discount. In May, the shelter experienced a 60 percent adoption rate. Volunteer Director Charlotte Doehner said the rate is extremely high for the local shelter. “We were blessed with a phe-

nomenal May, but we still have tons of dogs, puppies and cats,” she said. “We also have several litters of kittens that are about to be ready to adopt.” Doehner said the shelter currently has 156 dogs, 82 puppies and 54 cats up for adoption each available at a $25 discount off normal adoption rates. Going to bat for clients for over 42 years, Attorney Randolph Walker has made it his life’s mission to help others through legal representation. A native of Biggersville and a humanitarian at heart, the 67-year-old says he was drawn to the study of law at a young age. “I’ve wanted to be an attorney for as long as I can remember,” he said. “Having been reared in the county, I witnessed firsthand how much people depended on one another and wanted to go into a profession where I could help my neighbors.” A 1966 graduate of Easom High School, Walker earned his Juris Doctor from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is the husband of Jean Walker, the father of Torrey Walker and Randy Walker and the grandfather of Zoe Walker.

a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect. A Genius exam includes both 2D images and tomosynthesis scans. During the tomosynthesis-DIMENSIONAL portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A Genius exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam. The Hologic system is the Please see SCREENING | 2A
