A third candidate has joined the race for alderman at large in Corinth. Jennifer S. McCoy filed on Monday to run for that seat on the Board of Aldermen as a Democrat. McCoy, a teacher at Corinth Middle School, also made a run for the post four years ago in her first bid for elective office. She will face two-term incumbent Mike Hopkins in the Democratic primary. John Orman is running for the seat on the Republican ticket. Qualifying is open for about six more weeks, ending July 18. The party primary is Sept. 16, followed by runoffs, if

CommunityWide Vacation Bible School set “Kids will experience God’s word in surprising and unforgettable ways,” he said. “Each day, volunteers will reinforce one simple Bible truth, which makes it easy for kids to remember and apply to real life. There’s also a lot of great music kids will surely love.” Shock said each day, kids will move through interactive activity stations setup at the center. “We will have 140 to 150 volunteers working each night with the kids,” added Shock. Open registration is set for 5 p.m., on Monday at the center. “We are all really excited about this,” Shock said. “If this is as successful as we think it’s going to be, we know it will become an annual event.”

God filled the world with a lot of crazy creatures ... including the more than 350 children set to take part in the CommunityWide Vacation Bible School next week. Sponsored by First United Methodist Church, The Boys and Girls Club, The Lighthouse Foundation and Crosswind Ministries, the Weird Animals themed VBS will take place in the Easom Community Center at 700 Crater Street in the former South Corinth Elementary School on from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., June 10-13. “As far as we know this has never been done before,” said Randy Shock, pastor at First United Methodist Church. “To partner with three other great organizations and to be able
to offer a free vacation bible school to kids in the community is wonderful.” The school is open to children who have completed kindergarten through the 5th grade. “We’ll be feeding the kids supper each night,” said Shock. “On Friday night, we’ll invite all the families to come join us for the last night supper, as well.” Weird Animals is designed to teach kids who feel weird, different or even lost in a crowd that nothing compares to the love of Jesus.

The Board of Aldermen again accepted a bid for the West Corinth school property on Tuesday, clearing up an irregularity in the previous bid process. With stipulations allowing only narrow uses of the property for historical purposes, the only bidder for the property on Linden Street across from the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center was again the Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission, and the bid was again $1,499. This time, the bid was accepted with the caveat that if it should be successfully challenged by the state auditor or attorney general, the property will revert back to the city so that the city can deal with it in some other fashion. The city had to redo the bid process because the bid notice needed to have been published one additional time. The National Park Service wants to use the property to

It gives the park service battlefield land neighboring the interpretive center, provides another venue that can host educational presentations, and provides storage space. The purchased property does not include the playground area, which is on a separate parcel that did not revert to city ownership. East Corinth will be the last of the vacant elementary schools to be disposed. It is being sought by Mississippi Action for Progress for use as a combined head start facility for Corinth and Kendrick.
