Carpenter reflects on legislative session BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
(Editors note: This is the last of a three part series featuring Crossroads area state lawmakers and the highlights from their 2016 term in the Mississippi Legislature. District 4 Senator Rita Potts Parks, District 2 Rep. Nick Bain and District 1 Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter have
been featured.) Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter is currently the longest active lawmaker in the Crossroads area. The Burnsville native entered his third term and ninth straight session earlier this year representing the people of Alcorn and Tishomingo County. “I’m blessed to be back in the
capital representing my friends and family back home,” said Carpenter. It was a busy three months in the House. “While this session may have seemed controversial, it stands as a true testament of the Legislature putting forward bold, conservative ideas,” he said. “Many of these were
successful in becoming law, and some did not quite make it in the end.” Carpenter authored or co-authored 43 bills. Of those, eight will become law. Some highlights from Carpenter’s session includes: Please see CARPENTER | 2

The day of fun, fellowship and fundraising will also include a backyard grilling contest, live music from the Courthouse Pickers and the Fiveash Brothers, readings from the Crossroads Poetry Project, plenty of vendors, concessions and more. A local fire department will display their equipment and the AirEvac Lifeteam emergency helicopter is also scheduled to fly in. Organizer Sandy Childs said any politician who wants to speak and any one with a talent who wants to perform is welcome as are any business or organization who wants to set up a booth. There’s no fee for vendors, but they are asked to make a donation to one of the supported charities. A concession stand offering hot dogs, burgers and more will
