New deadline set for cemetery sale BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The bid process for the Forrest Memorial Park cemetery is starting over following a judge’s order in the case. A bid deadline had been set

for May 8. However, in an order entered Thursday in Prentiss County Chancery Court, Judge Michael Malski denied a motion for a new trial in the case and again directed the sale of the property by sealed bids.

Under the new timeline, bids must be submitted to Alcorn County Chancery Clerk Bobby Marolt by 5 p.m. on July 6. Anyone who bid for the May deadline would need to submit a new bid.

KOSSUTH — A misrouted truck driver caused a 12-hour closure of Wheeler Grove Road on Monday. Alcorn County Director of Emergency Services Ricky Gibens said the Howard Industries tractor trailer was carrying a 110,000-pound electrical transformer when the oversized load slid into a ditch about 50 feet from the Highway 2 intersection. “The truck driver attempted to let a vehicle pass and in doing so he eased a little too far over,” said Gibens. “The trailer portion of the truck was quite heavy and slid right into the ditch.” No one was injured. Gibens said the truck was delivering a large transformer for ACE Power from a plant in Hattiesburg to a new subdivision near Kossuth High School. “The driver and his escort service were rerouted by their GPS system down Wheeler Grove Road,” said Gibens. “They were apparently supposed to take Highway 45 to 72, then down Highway 2.” Two crane companies worked for several hours to pull the

Environmental Quality also responded to the scene after oil leaked from the transformer into a nearby creek. “MDEQ worked all night to clean up what had leaked,” said Gibens. MDEQ agents remained at the site throughout the day Tuesday.

Republican Trent Kelly handily carried Alcorn County on Tuesday en route to winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. One surprise emerged for the day: Voter turnout actually rose in the county, albeit slightly, compared to the first round of voting on May 20. Turnout totaled 3,593 (15.2 percent), compared to 3,501 on May 20. Predictions in the Circuit Clerk’s Office had been for a Kelly turnout of less than 3,000. With all precincts in and absentee ballots tabulated, Kelly finished with 2,836 (79.17 percent) to Democrat Walter

Fair takes next step to become better BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The best county fair possible. That was the mindset of Alcorn County Fair organizers when the event was revived five years ago. Organizers are ready to build on the four-year success come Sept. 15-19 at the Crossroads Arena. Over the past four years, an average of 9,000 people have joined in the fair fun, including a record 10,000 in 2012. “The fair is dedicated to providing the best possible entertainment, educational activities and competitive exhibits for the enjoyment of all indi-

viduals,” said fair committee member Danny Turner. “Word is getting out there on the quality product we have each year.” In its attempt to take things to the next level, organizers increased its advertising budget to $20,000 this year. “In order to grow, we had to do it,” said committee member Zane Elliott. “Several new events are being planned and we are hoping to have 12,000

to 15,000 people come out this year.” “The only way to get more people from around the region is to step up our advertising,” added Turner. Crescent City Carnival has committed to bringing in an additional five to six big rides this year. “This is the biggest thing in Alcorn County,” said Elliott. “The fair is a viable and esPlease see FAIR | 3A
