State inmate labor plan on hold BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Mississippi Department of Corrections’ plan to end the Joint State County Work Program is being put on hold, according to two local legislators. The Aug. 1 date that was an-
nounced to pull the program will not happen, Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter of Burnsville told the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors on Monday. “Your inmates are safe at this time,” he said.
The assurance is based on information received by Sen. Rita Potts Parks. Carpenter is skeptical that MDOC has the authority to end the program. “The legislation to form that joint state inmate program with
Alcorn, Tishomingo and several other facilities — I don’t think it can be undone without an act of legislation,” he said. At the invitation of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors, some members of the Alcorn board are heading to
Jackson later this week for a meeting on the inmate labor issue. Alcorn County built a facility to house 70 inmates in the program when the regional correcPlease see LABOR | 2

An employee was robbed and assaulted at a business in a highly residential neighborhood of downtown Corinth early Saturday morning. Rooster Run registration extended BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
“Roy the Rooster” is ready to “Run for the Dream.” The big chicken, who sits atop a sky-high perch in Gift Bottom, will be a big part of the 5K Rooster Fun Run/Walk to benefit the Corinth-Alcorn
County Special Needs Kids on June 20. “You can run, walk or pull your child in a wagon,” said special needs group director Havis Hurley. The registration deadline for the fun run/walk was been extended to June 11. Around 80-
90 have already registered for the event, according to Hurley. “We want this to be big,” said Hurley. “Sandy (Childs) and Keith (Jones) have really worked hard to make this thing work.” Please see RUN | 2
“The suspect then hit the victim in the head and pushed her to the ground,” said Detective Dell Green with the Corinth Police Department. “He then stole her laptop and fled the business on foot.” Green said Rodriguez did not hear or see the suspect leave in a vehicle. Property tax covers county garbage cost BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
With changes coming to county garbage collection, supervisors want to remind residents they will not be getting a bill in the mail. The cost is currently included in residents’ property taxes, and that will continue to be the case when Waste Connections takes over collection of county household garbage on July 1. Last week, the county awarded a contract to Waste Connections
at a cost of $5.98 per household monthly. “This is not an additional charge, and no bill will be sent to each household,” said Board President Lowell Hinton. Garbage is currently collected by the county using several county employees and inmate labor from the Joint State County Work Program. “The current household garbage pickup method created a Please see GARBAGE | 2

Tishomingo photo contest revived BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
IUKA — Tishomingo County resident Opal Lovelace is back at it again. The photographer is reviving her photo contest. After several years dormant, it will help raise funds for the nonprofit group, the Historians of Tishomingo County. With entries now being accepted, Lovelace is encouraging everyone to enter. “There are really no restrictions to enter this contest,” she said. “Anyone from anywhere can enter and the photo could have been taken anywhere. It’s really limitless. To us, participation is most important.” Entry fee is $5 per photo,
with 15 different categories to choose from. The categories include people, wildlife, pets, landscape, sports, Eagles, landmarks, engines (automobiles, trains, planes), sunrise/sunsets, architectural, old photo (50 years or older), Civil War, Native American, water (boats, fishing) and abstract. All entries must be 8x10 prints. “Pets always seem to be our most popular category,” said Lovelace. “We open it up to anything. The photo doesn’t have to be a picture of a dog or cat -- whatever someone considers a pet is good with us.” Lovelace said all photos will be judged fairly. “We try to consider that

not everyone is a professional photographer,” she said. “It’s okay to enter this contest if a person just started to shoot. If a photo isn’t in focus or the lighting isn’t just right, it doesn’t matter. The judges will fairly consider all photos.” Deadline for entry is September 1. An overall winner will be named and will receive $100 and a plaque. Ribbons and certificates will also be given for honorable mentions. Lovelace said proceeds from the contest will benefit the newly formed historians group and their plans to create and publish a new Tishomingo County family history Please see CONTEST | 2
