Residents prepared to elect aldermen BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

BY JEBB JOHNSTON

Rienzi residents are set to elect aldermen next week as the municipal election season comes to a close. In Alcorn County, Rienzi is the only town having an election on Tuesday, the municipal general election date. Neighboring counties have more active ballots, with contested races for mayor and aldermen in Burnsville, Iuka and Booneville. Rienzi has eight hopefuls in the running for seats on the town’s five-member Board of Aldermen: Joseph “Joe” Bishop, Jimmy Harwood, Kathy Marshall, David Massey (incumbent), Dale Leonard (incumbent), Harold Palmer (incumbent), Jim Strickland and Sandra Williams (incumbent). The top five will be elected. One of the incumbents, Eddie Williams, is not running again. Walter Williams, who is unopposed, will advance to a third term as mayor. Rienzi and all others having elections on Tuesday will be open for absentee voting on Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. It is the last opportunity to cast an absentee ballot in person. Polling time is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the town hall on Tuesday. The next four-year term for municipal officers begins July 3. Corinth’s elections are next year. Farmington’s races were settled in the May 2 Republican primary, and Kossuth and Glen are not required to hold an election because there are no contested races.

the CT-A stage. “James has done a great job, and his son, Xander, is also in the play,” added the director. “I’m so glad James and his children are getting to act together on stage. My family working on CT-A shows together is one of my fondest memories.” Working with an almost entire youth cast is nothing new for Bridges, who is a teacher in the Alcorn School District. “Many of the children in Dolittle have multiple parts. They have all been troopers to have their faces painted, then take it off within the hour and change into another costume,” she said. “I believe they have thoroughly enjoyed working on this show and I think the audience will be

With the arrival of June, busy days are ahead at the local farmers’ markets. The locations on Fulton Drive and Shiloh Road are open for business. “We’re not seeing a whole lot of produce for sale yet due to the fact that everything was a little bit late due to weather conditions,” said Mississippi State University Extension Agent Patrick Poindexter. “It’s been an odd year for weather with an extremely mild winter, but then it didn’t get quite hot enough for long periods of time to really get these vegetables up and going.” He expects an increase in seller permit requests at the extension office in the next couple of weeks. It is limited to local sellers, and the fee is $25 for the Fulton Drive location and $10 for the Shiloh Road market. The unusual weather patterns have also affected lawns. One of the biggest questions Poindexter is getting lately is about why some lawns and gardens are not showing growth. “Nine times out of 10, it’s not anything wrong that anybody’s doing, whether it be in their yard or their garden,” he said. The answer is in the soil temperature. “We had some days last week when the highs were in the low 70s and the nights were getting down in the low 50s, upper 40s,” said Poindexter. “Temperatures like that at night keep that soil cool, and that can retard the growth of grasses in your lawn and vegetables in your garden. Once we get into some warmer temperatures, es-

The life and adventures of “Dr. Dolittle” will roar to life this weekend at Corinth Theatre-Arts. The classic story by Hugh Lofting will feature Dolittle, the gentle Englishmen who can talk to animals, and his furry and feathered band of friends as they travel across Africa. “This is a great story that is worthy of re-telling,” said Director Twila Bridges. “Being able to present a classic like this is a great way to possibly get young people interested in some of our classic literature that is gathering dust on bookshelves.” Bridges said the show will feature both adults and children. “The cast has been amaz-
