Primary brings precinct changes BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The nation’s attention turns to Mississippi and seven other states on Tuesday for congressional primary elections. Alcorn County election holders will fire up the electronic
voting machines from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. to give local residents their say in one contested Republican primary race and two contested Democratic primary races. With longtime Sen. Thad Cochran’s reelection bid gar-
nering national attention, the Republican primary is expected to get the bigger turnout. Late in the week, absentee ballots suggested so, with about 100 Republican ballots issued (including those mailed out by the clerk’s office but not necessarily
returned) and 40 Democratic ballots issued. With no county races on the ballot to drive turnout, Caldwell expects a vote tally around 3,000 to 4,000. However, the clerk’s office has seen an uptick in voter interest in the closing
stretch. “It seemed to pick up this week, especially since the ads are running constantly on TV,” said Caldwell. Those ads are in Cochran’s Please see ELECTION | 2A

(Editors note: This is the first of a five part series to be presented each Sunday on the task forces setup by the Commission on the Future of Alcorn County.) The Excel By 5 certification process has been very important to Commission on the Future of Alcorn County leaders. As one of the first task forces set in place by the commission in August 2010, the Alcorn County Excel By 5 coalition features 16 community leaders and concerned citizens who work to promote parenting and children’s services through special events. “When we adopted the Excel By 5 program, we didn’t realize how timely it was,” said Sandy Williams, task force committee member. “Now the whole country is focusing on early childhood education.” The vision of Excel By 5 is to support families with children
ages 0-5 by encouraging best practices to use and enhance existing resources to optimize the care and education of young children by preparing them to enter school happy, healthy and with the skills they need to succeed. “We have been working hard towards becoming an Excel By 5 certified community,” said Williams. “We are excited to be so close to finishing the certification process. The process generally takes about two years, which means we should wrap it up in June.” Currently at 93 percent complete, the finish line is in sight. Please see FUTURE | 6A

The Alcorn County Schools Food Service Department is reinstating the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Meals program. The decision to do so was made by the members of the school board on March 24. During the months of June and July, breakfast and lunch will be provided at the Kossuth Elementary and Alcorn Central Elementary cafeterias. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.
Monday thru Thursday. All children ages 18 and under, as well as 19-year-olds with physical and/or mental handicaps, will be served free of charge. “Although it has been many years since this program was offered, we are very excited for it to return to the children of Alcorn County,” said Food Service Director for the Alcorn School District Peggie Bundy. “Many students rely on free and reduced-price school lunches and breakfasts. But when the last bell of the year Please see MEALS | 2A
