Watercolor artists share Congressional unique styles in exhibit contest will be decided Tuesday

BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The watercolor brush strokes of two of the region’s prize-winning artists are mixing in the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery’s latest exhibit. Sandra Carpenter of Corinth and Mary Spellings of Mercer, Tenn., each recently earned signature status with the Southern Watercolor Society. The gallery will host an opening with the two artists Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. for an exhibit that will be up for viewing through June 27. Both have exhibited at the gallery in years past and are back with new works. “I have always loved watercolor because it’s a kind of paint that you don’t really have to handle completely,” said Spellings. “It sort of does a lot of the work itself. To me, it’s a medium that’s alive. When I work in acrylic, it seems necessary to place each stroke.” She does not agree with the oftensaid notion that watercolor is not forgiving. Spellings enjoys painting people, animals and nature, and their interactions. In recent works, she has aimed to capture interesting textures, like the surface of an old weathered car. We’ve already got people calling wanting to know about absentees for the primary in August.” Turnout in the first round was 3,494, or 14.8 percent of the county’s active voters. Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert carried the county but fell short of the runoff in district totals. Kelly finished third in the county with 12.3 percent of the vote, and Zinn finished fourth with 9.5 percent. The field included 12 candidates who identified as Republicans. North Corinth voters will cast ballots at the SportsPlex building for the final time as the precinct changes locations in August. In-person absentee voting wraps up today with hours of 8 a.m. to noon. Polls will open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a photo I.D. is required to vote. White #0023 Kelly’s campaign has fo$ 00

North Mississippians are set to elect a congressman on Tuesday. The only race on the ballot is the runoff between Trent Kelly and Walter Zinn in the special election to complete the two-year term of the late Alan Nunnelee in the U.S. House of Representatives for the First Congressional District. Kelly, district attorney for the First Circuit Court District, is a 49-year-old Republican. Zinn, an attorney and political consultant, is a 34-year-old Democrat. The party affiliations are not listed on the ballot in a special election. Election officials hope voters will get out to the 17 county precincts, but signs are not pointing to much interest. Summer break is finally here. When August rolls around and it’s time to head back to school, a Corinth native has the incentive children need. DeWayne “Lamont” Sorrell is sponsoring the “Back 2 School Summer Jam Music Seminar” for a third straight year. The event is set for Aug. 8 at the Crossroads Arena. “We are moving the event to the arena to ensure it will be a success regardless of the temperature or weather outside,” stated Sorrell in his request for funding from the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Moving it to the arena the week of the event didn’t work for us last year, so we are Please see JAM | 2
