Historic antebellum home set for reopening BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Verandah-Curlee House is ready to greet the public once again. Closed to general visitation for the past eight years, the home will be the scene of two days packed with activities on Friday and Saturday, June 5 and 6, including tours each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as the eighth Corinth Home and Garden Tour of the Friends of the VerandahCurlee House focuses solely on the antebellum home this year. “It is important that we all participate in the preservation of the Verandah-Curlee House,” said organizer Mary Dee Kemp. “The designation of National Historic Landmark by the Department of Interior means that it is important to our whole country because of its Civil War history. Although we have had some help in the restoration process, it is primarily our

responsibility to make it attractive and authentic to all who come searching for knowledge.” A ticket to the event includes all of the programs, demonstrations and music scheduled for both days, and supports the ongoing restoration efforts. Helping to set the scene and mood will be a number of reenactors in period costume. Music will be performed on Saturday by local favorite Lost Cause and on Friday by Pat Arinder, who plays a vintage 1850 banjo. Arinder is a lifetime student of early American history and music of the Civil War period. He is a full-time volunteer for Living History programs in schools, museums, libraries and the Natchez Trace Parkway. The Mississippi Humanities Council recognized him as Staff photo by Mark Boehler educator of the year in 2014.
