City works on paving, utility plan BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Corinth is moving toward putting a process in place to ensure utilities under streets are in good shape before paving occurs. The Board of Aldermen recently voted to move forward with establishing a formal process. Utility work that causes newly paved streets to be dug up has been a concern for city
officials. “When we lay asphalt, we need some assurances these roads are going to last their intended lifespan,” said Street Commissioner Philip Verdung. Any proposed street work would come before the board before going on a production list for utility investigation. “We need a formal process so we can plan these projects out
more thoroughly and ensure that we don’t continue to have the same problems later down the road digging up utilities,” he said. “They need to be thoroughly investigated. The downtown, for instance, some of that infrastructure is 100 years old, at least 60 years old.” In other items before the city board: • Aldermen gave approval to
Fire Chief Todd Welch’s new promotion system which will not limit the amount of points firemen may earn for additional education. • Mayor Tommy Irwin expressed appreciation for resident Paul Fisher declining payment for an easement needed for one of the upcoming drainage basin projects. “We are grateful for him do-
ing that. We can spend that money somewhere else,” he said. • The board approved declaring a city court vehicle as surplus and approved the purchase of a 2016 Ford Explorer at the state contract price. • Sara Kennedy thanked the city for work on a sinkhole affecting her home in the Main and Webster area.

Friends of the Siege and Battle of Corinth got some help on Tuesday in its quest to assist the National Park Service. The Corinth Fire Department stepped in and took care of the issue of a home left to the group near Battery Robinett. The home, which was left to the Friends of the Siege and Battle at the corner of Waldron and East streets, was burned as part of a training exercise by firemen. “We checked with the fire department and they were able to use it in training,” said Larry Mangus with the Friends of the Siege and Battle of Corinth. “All we had to do was take the shingles off.” The home was left to the group in 2003 with the stipulation that once the owner was done living there, it would go to the friends group, according to Mangus. Corinth firemen started the controlled burn around 10 a.m. “This will be a nice addition for the NPS once Peters Construction comes in and cleans Please see HOUSE | 2A

Aaron Pyles is a 23-year-old firefighter for the Corinth Fire Department stationed at Station #1 located at Corinth City Hall in downtown Corinth. In addition to fighting fires, he goes on First Responder calls to help sick and injured people, including victims of vehicle accidents. Pyles has been with the fire department for one-and-a half years. “I had an interest in firefighting, so when I graduated high school, I joined a volunteer fire department,” said Pyles. “I liked being a volunteer fireman a lot, so I decided I wanted to do it as a career.” Pyles became a firefighter because he likes to help people. In his spare time, he likes to read, cook and work out at Cross City Crossfit.
“This is an outreach program for our children and families which demonstrates that we care about their nutritional needs,” she added. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Monday–Friday. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until noon Monday– Thursday. “In the Alcorn School District many students are involved in the free and reduced-price school lunches and breakfasts, but when school is out for the summer, those children do not receive this benefit,” said Bundy. “Our summer food service program helps close the gap and ensure that these kids have access to nutritious meals throughout the month of June.”
