District addresses exiting students BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Fifty-eight students have requested release from the Alcorn School District to other school districts in North Mississippi since November. It is an increasing number, according to the Alcorn School District board of education

members, who see the bottom line affected with each departing student. “We have to stop letting our students leave the district so easy,” said board member Russ Nash. “We’re losing money every time it happens.” According to board meeting agendas from the last sev-

en months, 40 students have been released to the Corinth School District, eight students to Booneville School District, six to North Tippah School District, two to Prentiss County School District and one each to Tishomingo County School District and South Tippah School District.

The district receives $5,600 from Mississippi Department of Education per enrolled student, per school year. At the May board meeting, Nash voted not to allow 10 students to be released to other districts. “I hate for it to come to this,” he said. “I don’t want to tell a

parent no, because I would hate to be told no. We have to start somewhere.” Often parents request student releases for understandable reasons like transportation or siblings already going to a different school. However, Please see STUDENTS | 6A

City orders many property cleanups BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Memorial Day Salute Veteran Jim Weaver of Corinth gives a salute toward fallen veterans Saturday morning inside Corinth National Cemetery as 7,600 flags are being placed on graves by volunteers, veterans, American Legion members, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. A Memorial Day service by American Legion Post 6 will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Corinth National Cemetery.

Owners of a number of unsightly Corinth properties are getting orders to clean up. With the arrival of warm weather, the city’s code enforcement has taken note of a number of properties where unattended growth is creating a nuisance situation. The Board of Aldermen recently set adjudication public hearings on two dozen properties. The hearings are scheduled for the next two regular board meetings, and property owners and other concerned parties will have an opportunity to address the board at that time. Public hearings are set for 5

p.m. June 3 on the following properties: ■ 1219 Wick Street (Absolute Auto Acceptance) ■ 1223 Wick Street (Newton property) ■ 202 Johns Street (Chambers) ■ 1103 Tate (Franks) ■ 1224 White (Jones) ■ 1002 Ross (Kozam) ■ 1008 Ross (Archambault) ■ Lot on Ross Street — part of block 382, Mitchell & Mark survey (Stone and Bryant) ■ Northeast corner of Ross and Hawkins (Willis) ■ Empty lot on Ross Street (Mid-South Real Estate Sales) ■ Dunlap Street — Ella Please see CLEANUP | 6A

Parker loves role in extension office BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

(Editor’s Note: In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Daily Corinthian will be featuring staff in the Alcorn County office.) Working at the Alcorn County branch of the Mississippi State University Extension Service has truly been a joyful experience for Tammy Parker. “The most rewarding aspect of my job is having the opportunity to work with the youth and volunteer leaders,” said the 4-H/FCS Extension Agent. Parker started out as a secretary and moved on to Program Associate. After going back to school and earning a Master’s degree in Agriculture and Life Sciences from Mississippi Sate University, she earned her current role. “I enjoy the variety of my

job. I may be doing a workshop, working out in the butterfly garden, doing activities with the cooking and photography clubs or even horse judging,” said Parker, who has served her community through the extension service for 21 years. The Corinth resident said the most challenging part of her job is making the public aware of the many opportunities 4-H has to offer. “I feel like it’s kind of a hidden secret in our community still. So, I really want to promote the program and let people know about the opportunities available for our children and young adults ages five to 18,” said the 4-H agent. “Most people still think it’s livestock, cooking and sewing, but it is so much more. There is also science, technology and other elements which build life skills to assist people in Please see PARKER | 3A
