Kossuth High School strikes baseball gold BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
PEARL — Connar Boyer took one for the team to give Kossuth its second consecutive Class 3A State Baseball Championship. The Aggie shortstop was the third player hit in the bottom of the seventh by Sumrall pitchers as KHS rallied for a pair of runs to claim a 4-3 decision in Game 2 of the series. KHS won Game 1 of the series with a 7-6 win in 11 innings on Wednesday. Friday’s win at Trustmark
Park concluded the Aggies postseason run with a 10-1 mark and second title in three appearances in the championship series. Kossuth (23-11) also becomes the first Alcorn County squad to win two baseball state crowns. Over the last two seasons, the Aggies have posted an 18-2 mark and 4-0 record versus Sumrall in two championship series contests. In Game 2, Kossuth didn’t get a ball out of the infield in collecting gold. Seniors Tyler Mercer and Matthew Woodruff
both were hit by Sumrall pitcher Drake Pace to begin the bottom of the seventh. Zack Walker reached to load the bases when no one covered first base on his sacrifice bunt to Pace. Charlie Bonee brought in the tying run by drawing a ninepitch walk to set the stage for Boyer. The sophomore infielder was drilled by Sumrall reliever Alex Knight on a 2-2 delivery to bring in pinch runner Kevin Ginn with the winning run and set off a wild celebration.

Two people escaped with only minor injures in a scary one vehicle, roll over wreck on U.S. Highway 45 near the U.S. Highway 72 interchange Friday afternoon. According to Corinth Police officers on the scene, the Prentiss County driver was north bound near the off ramp around 1:15 p.m., when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. When the driver awoke, his
vehicle was leaving the roadway. The grey Dodge Ram truck rolled after hitting the median embankment. The impact knocked the truck’s tailgate loose and one rear tire off the axle. The driver and passenger, both males, were transported by EMS to Magnolia Regional Health Center. Corinth Police officer Edward Evans was the responding officer to the wreck. Corinth Fire Department assisted PD at the scene.

Successful food drive helping Stamp Out Hunger BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The community sent thousands of pounds of food to the AMEN Food Pantry through the recent Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. “It was successful and we had a good response,” said Buddy Shumaker, a Corinth mail carrier. “We collected about 5,000
■ Related food drive photo on Page 2. pounds here in Corinth. We really appreciate everybody’s participation.” While that number is down some from last year, it is a little more than was collected two years ago and brings much-
needed stock to the shelves of the pantry. The annual drive asks residents to leave a sack of nonperishable food beside the mailbox for collection by the mail carrier. This year, Shumaker said some generous residents also left monetary donations which were handed over to the Alcorn Ministry for Emergency Needs.

Gen. Grant uses a bridge made of pontoon boats to cross the Army of the Potomac over the North Anna River. He nearly makes a costly mistake by ordering his troops into a trap set by Gen. Lee. Turns out, Lee is ill and the trap goes unsprung.
