County could retain some inmate labor BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Mississippi Department of Corrections is not ruling out the possibility of some inmate laborers shifting to the Alcorn Community Work Center. But, in response to inquiries

from the newspaper, MDOC said this week that the facility will continue to house inmates participating in the Alcohol and Drug Program after the scheduled end of the Joint State County Work Program on Aug. 1. “If the Alcorn CWC is not

filled to capacity when the Joint State County Work Program ends, inmates can be placed there,” said Grace Fisher, MDOC spokeswoman. “Space for inmates for A&D at the CWC takes priority.” When MDOC announced on

April 30 plans to end the Joint State County Work Programs as of Aug. 1, it said in a press release that inmates in the programs in 30 counties will be moved to the agency’s 17 CWCs and will still be available to perform work for counties. But

the Alcorn CWC began housing only inmates in the Alcohol and Drug Program several years ago, creating uncertainty about whether there will be any available inmate laborers, who do Please see LABOR | 2

Auction to benefit historic home BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Local artists are putting some of their best work on the auction block to help the ongoing restoration of the VerandahCurlee House. The silent art auction is back with the Home and Garden Tour. “We have more than 100 pieces of art that have been donated by very creative artists from

Corinth and the surrounding area,” said Artist Guild President Sonny Boatman. “A wide variety of styles and mediums are represented.” The artists’ contributions are on display now and bidding is open at the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery. Bidding will continue through the end of the month at the gallery and then resume at the guest house behind the Verandah-Curlee House on June

5 and 6 during the tour of the historic home. In addition to paintings, the auction offers some dimensional objects such as stained glass pieces. Also featured are photographs, a collection of sketches of local church buildings, and a number of pieces that hung in the law office of Robert Krohn. Improving technology is a focus for Alcorn School District Network Administrator Rose Seaborn this summer as she preps the district’s 11 campuses for a faster Internet connection. “I keep getting the request to increase bandwidth, and thankfully it’s about to happen,” said Seaborn. “This summer we will be working to get several important components in place that are necessary before the install.” The district is set to double their current Internet connection speed increasing bandwidth from 100 mbps to 250 mbps. Seaborn received the approval from the Board of Education earlier this month to purchase a new firewall and content filtering solution from Howard Technology. The board also approved the purchase of a new backup and recovery system for the

As many hit the road for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, local law enforcement officers are reminding drivers to click it or risk getting a ticket. “We are predicting it to be a pretty weekend with a lot of people taking advantage of warm weather and time off work to spend some quality time with their families,” said MHP Troop F spokesperson Trooper Ray Hall. “Our main goal is to ensure the roadways and highways are safe for our citizens so they can have a safe and enjoyable holiday. “ Motorists should expect to see extra troopers on patrol. At 6 p.m. on Friday, the Mississippi Highway Patrol entered their 2015 Memorial Day Holiday Enforcement Period which will conclude at midnight on Monday, May 25. During the holiday period, all available manpower will be utilized statewide in the establishment of safety points to promote seat belt usage, prevent impaired driving and ensure safe operation of vehicles by licensed drivers. Saturation patrols will also be
