Coroner identifies murder victim BY MARK BOEHLER editor@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County’s most recent murder victim has been identified. Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones told the Daily Corin-

thian late Saturday afternoon the May 12th shooting victim is 37-year-old Jorge Aguilar Olivera of Champoton, Campeche in Mexico. The identification delay was due to finding next of kin in

Mexico, said Jones. Olivera lived in Works Apartments on Cardinal Drive in Corinth. According to his Facebook page, he was employed as a welder at Monotech in Tishomingo County.

Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell told the Daily Corinthian he has every criminal investigator in the sheriff’s office working the case and he took up the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation’s (MBI) offer to

assist. “MBI is assisting in the investigation,” said Caldwell. “We are following all leads.” The sheriff would not release Please see MURDER | 2A

GLEN — Glendale Elementary School staff came to an agreement earlier this week. They decided not to show the sadness associated with their beloved school’s closure in front of their students. “It’s summer. School’s out and these kids should be happy,” said Amy Williams, a fourth and fifth grade teacher. “They can’t see us sad. It will only make them sad ... but trying to hide the tears has been hard -- as hard as it is to say goodbye to this school.” The 19-year GES veteran keeps reminding herself, “when God closes one door, he opens another.” “All of us teachers are trying to look at the positive side of everything going on here ... that something good is going to come out of this sad situation,” Williams said. As she fought back tears, Williams quickly glanced around her empty Glendale classroom on Friday, the school’s last day. “I’m excited, though,” she said convincingly. “I’m going to have fun in my new classroom -- I might even paint it.” Like many Glendale teachers and staffers, Williams will move to Alcorn Central when school begins in August. Most current GES students will also transfer to ACES. “The hardest thing is breaking up this family,” said Williams. “Everyone at this school works so good together. We love these kids and we love each other.” A prime example of the

RIENZI — Showing off a child’s handwritten letter with green stick-person art, Lisa Palmer leaned against a ceiling high pile of packed boxes full of books and supplies from her Rienzi Elementary School classroom. Across the top of the personal note read, “I love you, Ms. Lisa.” It was a special goodbye from one of her second grade students on the last day of the Rienzi school’s existence. “Only a few of the kids actually understand what’s going on ... only a few realize their school is closing,” said Palmer, a 20year veteran RES teacher. “It’s always hard to end any school year, but this one is different. This one is the hardest ever.” Palmer and several other teachers gathered to reminisce in her empty classroom on Friday, the school’s final day. “It’s an overwhelming feeling,” said Palmer, wiping a tear from her eye. “This is home -- my parents went to school here, I went to school here, all my children and grandchildren have been here. The memories are endless for me. It’s always been a part of my life and now I have to say goodbye, rather I like it or not.” Third grade teacher Patti Poindexter is another long-time Rienzi educator. The Kendrick native said her 30-minute drive across Alcorn County to the small Rienzi school has never bothered her. “I’ve been doing it for 28 years,” she said. “I used to think I would transfer to Alcorn Cen-
