STANTONVILLE, Tenn. — A 44-year-old chiropractor with a practice in Adamsville has been charged with aggravated statutory rape of a teenage girl, according to McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck. He was later released on a $20,000 bond and the maximum penalty for the alleged crime is 15 Barnes years. Barnes works at Barnes Family Chiropractic in Adamsville. The 14-year-old victim’s father contacted the sheriff on Mother’s Day, May 11 to report that his daughter had been involved in a sexual relationship with an adult. Sheriff Buck said the father had gone through his daughter’s social media and looked at the text messages between her and Barnes. When the father asked the daughter about the messages, she confided to him about the relationship. Amy Ballard, the sexual investigator for the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department, and Buck interviewed the victim and her mother. The investigation continued before a

Children will have a chance to turn a few of summer’s lazy days into a creative outlet. Reservations are being taken now for summer art camp at the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery with retired educators Teresa Smillie and Vicki Avery. It has become one of the gallery’s most popular offerings. “The guild’s purpose is to increase the appreciation for art in people of all ages, and you can’t begin too early,” said Guild President Sonny Boatman. In the recent exhibit of Corinth High School art, he was excited to see some familiar names of children who had participated in past camps. “It’s nice to see that their interest in art has continued,” he said. Less than two years ago Barbara Evans lost her husband, Jerry, in a motorcycle accident. On Saturday, she tried to hold back tears while addressing those in attendance at the second annual Motorcycle Awareness Day: Can You See Me Now. “The man that hit Jerry said he didn’t see him,” Evans said. “He didn’t see him ... I hate those words.” Evans’ husband was killed in October 2012 when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle at an intersection in Prattsville, Ala. The motorist was attempting to make a turn. “It’s amazing, but all it takes is one little mistake to end someone’s life,” she said. “Any kind of distraction can kill a person someone loves.” Evans said the event really hit home. “A motorcycle rider has only two wheels,” said Evans. “Chances are, when they go
down, the rider isn’t coming back up.” The event featured a working live demonstration of a grim scene of the head-on collision of a car versus a motorcycle. Nineteen-year-old Cody Coleman portrayed the victim. “I really wanted to do something to help get the word out to pay attention while driving,” Coleman said. “It really puts all this in perspective playing the dead guy.” Those who attended also heard testimonials from Jeff Cunningham of New Albany, who was a motorcycle training officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol before the accident that changed his life. Several local emergency agencies participated in the event including Magnolia EMS Alcorn 911, Air Evac, Corinth Fire Department, Corinth Police Department and Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones.
