Fire destroys Liddon Lake structure BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
An abandoned structure, part of the historic Liddon Lake complex, burned to the ground Wednesday afternoon. The former commercial, turned residential building at 1984 U.S. Highway 72 East (Liddon Lake hill area) across from Tractor Supply Co. was fully involved when Corinth firefighters arrived on the scene around 2:15 p.m. “It was a large fire,” said Corinth Deputy Fire Chief James Bryant. “Since we knew it was abandoned, we let it burn and made the decision not to enter. We were just trying to keep the flames from spreading.” Dark clouds of smoke could be seen billowing across busy Highway 72 during the fire. Two Corinth Fire Department units and seven firefighters responded to the blaze, while Corinth Police officers and Alcorn County Constable John-
ny Bulter assisted with traffic control. The structure had no power or utilities active at the time of the fire. “We are unsure what or how the fire started,” added Bryant. “At this time, the fire is under investigation.” A man seen in the area during the fire was questioned by authorities. Some vegetation and several large trees were also damaged in the fire. According to Bryant, the structure was of historical significance. The building was part of the Liddon Lake complex, originally known as Crystal Lake, Please see FIRE | 2

Scheduled for a hearing during the board’s June 20 meeting is what is left of the old building next to Shirley Dawg’s on Wick Street. Alderman Andrew Labas requested Building Inspector Greg Tyson assess the property because of concerns about the possibility of bricks falling. The board voted to adjudicate one property already in the process — 1619 Bunch Street — which has other issues. The code enforcement officer has identified problems with open

Kossuth Elementary School has been honored as one of the top value added schools in the state. Mississippi Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools (PREPS) was at the Alcorn School District Board of Education’s May meeting to present KES Principal Charla Essary with the award. “Kossuth Elementary is being recognized for English language arts growth for the 201516 school year,” said PREPS’ Patti Permenter. “The students at that school showed tremendous growth during the school
ranked fourth best in the state according to Mississippi Department of Education’s Accountability Ratings for 201516 school year. “We have a great school,” said Essary. “We have great students, teachers and parents and a wonderful community.” With Essary in the leadership role, bell-to-bell instruction is one of the keys to the school’s success. “We have started utilizing extra time at the end of class, even if it’s a fun educational activity like flash cards,” added Essary. “This helps us use every minute we have with our students teaching them something.”
