Cycle shop cleanup effort continues BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The cycle shop property at the corner of Fillmore and Tate Street could be salvaged, according to the city building inspector. The property received another extension from the city board for cleanup efforts, this time until June 6. Larry Meeks,

owner of the lot facing one of the busiest downtown intersections, is currently hospitalized and could not attend Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. His wife, Juanita Meeks, speaking on his behalf, said he stepped on a nail while working in the building. At the board’s request, Build-

ing Inspector Greg Tyson assessed the structure. “It’s really not in too bad a shape,” said Tyson. “The building can be salvaged.” However, because of the large amount of items inside, he was not able to fully examine the interior. “That back wall is the biggest concern,” he said.

It may need roof work, but it is not currently leaking. It also needs an electrical upgrade, said Tyson. Some brick needs to be relaid because of tree damage. The shielding placed in front is planned to be temporary due to some of the front glass being shot out. Meeks plans to remove it when the storefront is fixed.

Firefighters rescue injured city worker BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Dirt caved in on two Corinth Sewer Department workers Tuesday afternoon at a work site, leaving one with a broken leg. City officials identified the worker as Wayne Bennett and said it appeared he had a broken leg and injuries to his other leg. A second individual was also taken to the hospital to be checked out for a possible shoulder injury, said John Michael Tucker, the city’s construction works supervisor. He said replacement of a sewer line was in progress

ship. “We have had a long relationship with the Crossroads Museum and are so very happy to finally be able to donate proceeds to them,” said cookoff chairman Steve Knight. “We Please see COOKOFF | 2A

The three-week extension is to allow time for more cleanup and to give the inspector access to fully examine the interior and report back to the board. Alderman J.C. Hill commended the cleanup work done thus far. Mrs. Meeks presented a plan to the board dealing with general cleanup.

at Magnolia and Oak Lane. Bennett and the other worker were in an area about 15 feet deep when the bank caved at about 3 p.m., trapping them from the waist down. Plywood was used to brace the walls to keep more dirt from caving in during the rescue. Tucker speculated the vibration of the equipment caused the dirt to work loose and fall. First responders dug Bennett out. Alderman Chip Wood, serving as mayor pro tem at Tuesday evening’s meeting of the city board, requested prayers for Bennett.

The Alcorn County Tax Collector’s Office is preparing for a few changes coming this year that will bring some cost increases. The Board of Supervisors on Monday approved a contract for the printing of motor vehicle tag renewal postcards, which is shifting from the

Boat parade named after Wiley BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

Wiley

IUKA — The man who loved the water and wanted some way to recognize Eastport, may be smiling down on the weekend boat parade which has been named in his honor. The Bob Wiley Boat Parade will take place Saturday as one of the featured highlights of the First Rockin’ on the River Festival. The parade will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at J.P. Coleman State Park. It has been billed as being a “patriotic boat parade like no other” by event organizers. Any type of boat is welcome to join

the parade in honor of “Captain Bob Wiley.” All boat captains have to do is to show their crews’ patriotism by decorating their boats in red, white and blue. The Rockin’ on the River Festival is a salute to veterans for Armed Forces Day, as well as a celebration of Mississippi’s Bicentennial. The decision to add Wiley’s name to the parade as a memorial event was an inspired one, said event organizer Lee Ann Robertson. “Bob was such a nice guy. He was the kind of person who Please see PARADE | 2A
