Michie School honored for its green initiative

Scholarship recipient Nathan Rhodes, a senior at Kossuth High School, was one of the students from across the state selected as a winner in the “Pay It Forward” Scholarship Competition from the ESF Get 2 College Center. Rhodes was joined for the presentation by Stephen Brown, Katie Mayo and T.J. Walker of ESF.
Michie School science teacher Debra Steen recently received some very exciting news. During the 2013-14 school year, Mrs. Steen’s students competed with other students in Tennessee and across the nation in a competition sponsored by “NEED” (National Energy Education Development) which will soon celebrate its 34th year. Michie School’s team took first place in Tennessee’s division and has been invited to Washington, DC for four days. Michie won the Tennessee Elementary School of the Year and is now a National Elementary Finalist. Steen, along with her students, will travel to Washington in June.
While there, they will attend a national recognition ceremony, tour DC, and enjoy a dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of Washington. Winning schools received an all expense package for two students, but others may go at their own expense. The cost is $550 per student. This is the same group of students who spearheaded Michie’s recycling effort this year when Keep America Beautiful held a competition earlier in the school year. Michie School won third place in the nation and received a $500 award. Steen and some of her students were featured on WBBJ TV and WMCTV.com. Congratulations to Steen and her fifth graders!

IT IS NOT WHAT YOU EAT ... BUT WHAT EATS YOU Precisely who was Jesus trying to help when He said, “love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and presecute you,” (Matthew 5:44}? Please note that He did not say do nothing to your enemies, which in itself would be admirable, but He said “do good” to those who hate you. But again, who would benefit the most by such actions--your enemy or you? Let me answer up front--this approach will only sometimes change your enemy, but IT WILL ALWAYS CHANGE YOU! Statistics reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association have consistently indicated that two thirds of the patients who visit doctors have symptoms either caused or aggravated by mental stress. Again, I quote from Dr. S. I. McMillen, who stated that “What a person eats is not as important” to his health as “the bitter spirit, the hates, and the feelings of guilt that eat at him.” In his book, None of These Diseases, he proves by numerous case studies that envy, selfcenteredness, resentment, hatred and immorality are surely disease-producing factors. When we hate or hold a grudge against our neighbor, we hurt ourselves more than our neighbor. We make oursleves susceptible to ulcers, high blood pressure, tension headaches, insomnia, heart trouble, strokes-the list goes on and on. If we nurse a bitter spirit, not only are we causing constant trouble for ourselves and those around us in this life, we are also forsaking the kind of attitude that will allow us to “See the Lord.” Let me give you the entire quote from Hebrews 12:14-15: “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord; looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.” We will do well to go back to Matthew 5 and note that the primary goal of loving our enemies, doing good to them, and praying for them, is “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust” (verse 45}.
