Stay issued in suit against sheriff BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A federal judge has ordered a three-month stay on proceedings in the sexual harassment lawsuit against Sheriff Charles Rinehart pending a ruling by the U.S. Department of Justice on the accuser’s right to sue. The stay follows the Equal Employment Opportunity

Commission’s revocation of a prior right to sue ruling. According to court records, U.S. District Judge Debra M. Brown entered the order Wednesday in response to a motion by the defendants — Rinehart, Alcorn County and the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department. The plaintiff is Michelle Cohoon-Loyd, a former sheriff’s

department employee who reported directly to Rinehart. Cohoon-Loyd filed suit in February after receiving a notice of right to sue from the EEOC in November. However, in April, the EEOC district director revoked the notice, which was issued in error. The EEOC forwarded Cohoon-Loyd’s request to the DOJ, which handles the

process for all local and state government entities. The defendants’ motion speculates that the notice of right to sue was issued prematurely before the DOJ reviewed the charge. Brown’s order requires the plaintiff to notify the court within seven days of a determination on the EEOC claim. If there is no determination made

by Aug. 13, the court will then consider whether to lift the stay. A plaintiff must exhaust administrative remedies and obtain a right to sue letter before pursuing a federal employment discrimination lawsuit. Cohoon-Loyd’s suit alleges sexual harassment, a sexually hostile work environment and retaliation.

Corinth District adopts teacher salary schedule BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Some staff changes and new salary schedules are set for the Corinth School District. For the upcoming school year, the district’s trustees this week adopted the teacher salary schedule including the $1,500 across-the-board raise approved by the Legislature. It also reflects revisions to the first couple of years that

are designed to give teachers a more competitive starting salary. While the state made no change to the $12,500 base salary for teacher assistants, the board adopted a new schedule of supplements for assistants based on years of experience. For years one to five, it is $250; years six to 10, Please see SALARIES | 6A

The Alcorn School District Board of Education recently approved a handful of new staff hires. Questions arose with the request from Superindent Gina Rogers Smith to hire a new Elementary Curriculum/Testing Director for the district. “I don’t understand why we are filling this position,” said District Five board member Randy Wilbanks. “We keep talking about ways to save

money, so why hire someone in a position that we cut a few years ago?” According to Smith, Title 1 funds Wilbanks from the state recently became available to Please see HIRES | 6A
