Schools near final days Murder victim BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Glendale and Rienzi elementary schools will shut down for good next week, less than two months after the county school district’s 3-2 vote for the closings. Earlier this week, Alcorn School Distrist interim board

member Lamar Walker provided an update on savings of school mergers. “As of right now, we can’t give an amount, but in July we should be able to provide some kind of a number of were we stand on our savings,” said Walkner. He added, “although, we

won’t know the exact amount until July of next year.” Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell said in March the district would save around $800,000 per year with the school closures. However, following the anPlease see SCHOOLS | 2A

An investigation continues into the death of a man found shot to death on the side of a county road earlier this week. Sheriff Ben Caldwell said Saturday they were continuing to investigate the case and there was no new information ready to be released. The body of an unidenti-

fied male was discovered by a motorist around 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the Shady Grove area of Alcorn County on County Road 418, south of County Road 419. The man had been shot multiple times and had no identification on him. The body has been sent to the state crime lab in Jackson for autopsy.

People of the Crossroads

BY KIMBERLY SHELTON GLEN — Taking advantage of warmer weather, the Town of Glen will host their 14th Annual Glen Heritage Day Festival in celebration of the community’s rich history and local heroes on Saturday, May 21. Held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glen Town Hall, the annual festival will feature singing, food and fun for all ages. “Our food and activities will be free, but we will be accepting donations,” said Town Clerk Lynn Fielding. “Donations of any size are appreciated.” Saturday’s highlights will include inflatables for children as well as classic restored tractors and other antique farm equipment from

A modest increase in student enrollment will boost the Corinth School District’s state funding in the coming fiscal year. While the per-student funding formula for the district was unchanged, the Mississippi Adequate Education Program allocations awaiting the governor’s signature would give the district $12.486 million for fiscal 2017, an increase of $187,750 from the current fiscal year. A slight increase in the district’s average daily attendance in the months of October and November accounts for about $35,000 of that amount, while a student enrollment increase of about

50 is the reason for about $150,000 in additional funds. The district will also see a bump in Chickasaw Cession funding — $432,882 for fiscal 2017, an increase of $103,401, for a total state funding increase of $291,151. Those numbers may increase in some years as the result of timber sales. “We have fared pretty well in terms of where we are in funding in comparison to what many others across the state are facing,” Superintendent Lee Childress told the board of trustees on Thursday. The district was able to absorb a recent cut of approximately $56,000 in the current
